Pigment inks usually don't do well on glossy papers, rubs right off. Are you
planning on spraying an overcoat on them/

Thanks for the info, Overcoating would be an option I will offer but
will try and see how they hold up. everything will be an experiment.

What paper would you recommend, I would like to get some sample packs
and play, I will do a lot of playing before selling, more fun too?

Bill-

Steve was understating your problem...pigment inks are horrible on
glossy paper...spraying helps, but not an easy solution.

If you really want glossy, you should be using a dye ink like Lyson
Small Gamut.

I think everyone would agree that FS inks are fantastic for matte art
papers.

You might want to search the archives here for some threads on
spraying...there are a few real experts on overcoating here.

Well I wouldn't go that far. My last 4 sales I've given customers the
choice of photorag or sprayed semimatte and once they've seen them
they've taken semi matte. The only problem spraying is to do it
without picking up crap out of the air. I'm a trifle nervous over
archival issues though.

You are talking unencapsulated pigment inks, and gloss media, which is not a
terribly compatible combination...

Julian,

Back in the earlier and mid 70's I sprayed a bunch of my silver prints that
were mounted on black board with Kyrlon spray primarily to try and keep the
black of the mattes black. The prints have spent most of their life in boxes
but some 30 years later things seem to be fine. My mother used a lot of
Krylon on pencil and charcoal sketches and they are also doing well. Not
hard data but maybe it will give you some reassurance.

Thanks Martin. The Ilford semi matte seems a nice paper for low dmax images.
I still prefer PR for long greys though.

Re: [Digital BW] Paper

2002-08-03 by Robert Morrison

Yeah, I don't think the Krylon will be the problem here...the question is if
there is a nasty interaction between pigments and the paper coatings on the
semi-matte/luster papers. My guess is that you will be ok...because the
Semi-Matte paper was formulated to work with Epson Archival Pigments
(10000). Might be useful to ask Paul Roark to put a test wedge in his fader
just to have some idea where we stand. I could certainly supply the
paper...but the test would be with Selenium Piezotone ink...I don't run any
MIS inks anymore.
