First, I checked out your website, and enjoyed viewing some of your
images.

Second, complaining about not getting the service you required from a
list where all contributions are free serves no purpose except to make
you look like a complainer.

Try rephrasing your query, especially in the 'Subject' line, asking the
same question on other lists or NG's (but not by cross-posting) if you
strike out on one, and searching the FAQ's and other on-line resources
available through Google and the other engines, and the hardware-software
mfgr's websites.

It would be wonderful if I could get a definitive answer to all of my
questions the first, second, or even third time out, but sometimes,
especially in new fields of endeavour, more persistence is required.

I not only did not get a definitive answer, I got no answer after 2
posts, but there is no end to bickering about who has the better of
anything

I don't recall your original question (and may not have been
able to answer it if I did), but continuing to carp about the
nature of the list will not serve your purpose. I'm not keen
on endless debates over issues that don't happen to interest
me, either, but they obviously interest the participants, and
it is a public forum. In other words, it is what it is. If it
is not to your liking, you may find a list or forum more agreeable
to your tastes elsewhere, but you are unlikely to change the
nature of the list.

Saw your question both times, didn't know the answer either time. Get used
to list life. It also happens that you go to great trouble to answer
someone's question and they never let you know if they read it or it was
helpful.

Just can't expect too much from humans.

V,

First, what was your question? Sometimes you need to ask more than once.
This place gets more than a bit noisy from time to time.

Second, there are seldom definitive answers and the best you are likely to
get are opinions. Unfortunately opinions often differ and result in debate
or argument.

I think you missed my point entirely.

You might get people to do your research for you one time, by
complaining, but it is not a very good long-term strategy, if you are
serious about learning.

As far as I know, no-one on this list owes me anything, so I have no
right to go making demands on their time, and complaining if they do not
respond. Also, I am taking the time to answer a fair number of posts, for
one with my limited level of experience, in order that I might put
something into the list, before I start assuming that anyone 'owes' me
anything in return.

You might want to try searching the list database for 'VM curves and
contrast'. It brought up a lot of hits.

I'm not going to answer this because it's out of my experience. But you need to provide a lot more info.
What printer, platform, color settings, driver settings, etc.? There are a myriad of things that could be wrong.
There are a lot of people here using that workflow who could comment.

I guess I issed your point entirely, what was it? I don't wnat
anybody to do any research for me, never asked for research, I
thought if anyone ran into this problem it would save a lot of time
doing research.

I don't think I am making any demands on anybodys time and no one on
this list owes me anything no do I owe anybody anything. I mearly ran
into something I hadn't experienced before and hoped some one had an
answer. After 2 posts and no answer of any kind by all sorts of
bandering about who has the best what I thought just maybe I am
wasting my time here but guess what, my complaming got several
responses and possibly a fix.

Thank you all for the suggestions and I hope you don't think I
assumed you owed me anything.

Re: [Digital BW] No answer

2002-08-13 by Martin Wesley

Vinny,

I read your post and that one left me pretty stumped. I hoped someone else
would pick it up.

Have you tried this with other images or did this just happen with the one
file? If it is just the one file than I would have to mark it up to
coincidence that it printed well without a separation curve.

Printing with or without a curve is definitely going to change the look of a
print because the curve is manipulating the file data so that the Epson
driver will use the different inks in different tonal ranges than it
normally would.

As Tyler mentioned, some more information would be of help.

Re: [Digital BW] No answer

2002-08-13 by vinyo88

Martin, this is the first time the contrast changed (higher) with any
print file I have been using. The amazing thing is it printed so well
without the curve ( I originally forgot to add it) when I made the
first print. After adding the curve the print contrast jumped
considerably higher. This is the first print that did that. I have
printed several others without seeing a contrast jump. I haven't
printed any others to see if it is doing this to others. I am gong to
try that next hopefully it is just a quirk with this one file. I will
let you know if it does it to others.

Vinny,

Is this the first time that you had printed this
particular image? Is it possible that you had
already applied a curve earlier, accidentally
saved it including the curve, then later applied
it a second time? Just a stab in the dark to
help figure this one out...

Vinny,

I've had a similar experience with a question - two posts no response. I
have to believe our questions stumped the band. Ready for a third try?

Don you may have hit the nail on the head, I just printed a different
photo and it printed fine. I think there is something wrong with the
file. I am going to rescan the neg and start over.

Thanks to all

Martin, I think the file is corrupted or something. I printed a
different file and it prints fine. I am going to rescan the neg and
start from scratch.

I wish to thank everyone for there help. I will let you know if it
works ok

Vinny,

Unless you are really short of file space try to save a copy the original
scan file. I typically do this and after I do initial spotting, cropping and
overall adjustments I save a copy of this initial working file, too.

Re: [Digital BW] No answer

2002-08-13 by Jerry Olson

Vinny, we know the problem must be in your system somewhere, because so
many people on the list get
great results with German etching paper. Have you tried printing 100,
75, 50, and 25 position squares of gray? Do they all print smoothly?
Do you get a deep black when you do this? How about a long gradient from
black to white? Are pieces of it missing, or are there big jumps in
density? Is your picture high key, or fairly normal? How about other
pictures... Same problem?

If you don't get it solved, send me all your settings, and printer model
#. Maybe you just have one little setting wrong. That can do it.

Jerry, I am using EAM paper not German etching, but I may have the
answer. I think the file is bad. I am going to rescan and try it over
