scanner help needed - microtek or nikon

2002-08-26 by rsc236

hi everyone,

i was just at b&h today, and walking in there i was almost
definately going to buy a nikon coolscan 4000.

the guy there told me a couple of things i never heard before. he
said that, for black and white, the LED lighting in the nikon is not
as good as the cold cathode light.

he said ICE was great for color, but since it cannot be used for
black and white, dust will always be a problem.

he said, looking at the nikon 4000 or the microtek 4000vf(?)
scanners - if they were the same price he'd definitely go with the
microtek. but the good news, he said, was the microtek was about
$400 less expensive.

now i'm confused. who's used the microtek? anyone agree or
disagree with this info? thanks for your help!

I'm sure others are perfectly happy with their Microteks but I'll add
a vote for the Nikon LS-4000. The Nikon is spoken of highly all the
time. I have had nothing but amazing results with mine. And it can do
small batch scanning of strips of film as well. And the Digital ICE
capability is not to be discounted. I formerly had a Minolta film
scanner that did just fine but did not have ICE and now that I have it
wonder how in the world I ever lived without it. Saves easily 15-30
minutes per scan of dust-spotting.

All these images we scanned with my Nikon LS-4000:

I've used the LS 4000 for the last several months since it was released.
It true about the DIG ICE and B & W film except for the chromogenic B &
W films. I've enjoyed using Kodak's Portra BW 400 and TCN 400 which both
work the Dig ICE.

Actually the lower level Nikon Coolscan IV ED (LS-40) scanner is very
good and also equipped with Digital ICE. I would love to have the
Canoscan as well for my friend to use but the Nikon version is worth
the additional features.

And Kodak Portra is quite a blessing! Smooth gradations which one
can't resist :)... It's the chromogenic T-Max in my opinion :D...
