EAM is shit for midtones - others love it but it sucks (tin hat on) PR is a
world away but it costs more. I use eam for proofing only and PR or WT for
final prints

Subject: [Digital BW] New Piezotone for 1280 user... help please...

I love the colors of these inks. I've gotten a couple of really
lovely prints, but my primary subjects are actors for headshots.
The transition from shadow to light is a little abrupt. I've only
used Epson Archival Matte so far, will better papers help? On a
tight face shot, the transition from shadow to midtone to light is
just a bit too "defined". I'm blanking on the term, but it's
that "digitalized" or "pixelated" look going from one color to the
next. It makes the image look pretty flat.

Will the Hahnem\ufffdhle photo rag that I just ordered help this?

Thanks for any info.

"PR" or "EAM"?

2002-08-26 by treadwinkle

Sorry, what is PR and EAM? Please educate me and if you have a
better system, let me know. I'm willing to spend the bucks if it
will mean I don't have to go back to the dark room. I'm about ready
to do that, unfortunately.

PR = Photo Rag

EAM = Epson Archival Matte

which supposedly is being replaced by EEM = Epson Enhanced Matte

Ah, thank you!!!

I'm not ready to give up on Piezotone yet. I'm relieved to know he
was talking about paper, not ink! :-)

Actually EAM is very good at its price point although its
archivability is probably overstated. It's surprisingly very white
(relative to the yellowish cast of the Photo Glossy which is mediocre
for B and W Digital) and the Epson inks print very decently (but
still not rich enough blacks) on it with my C80.

Although EAM is very cheap to print out. It doesn't use up the inks
as much as the horrific Photo Glossy and it is rather durable as a
print.

I have samples of the Photo Rag and it's fabulous. It's whiter than
EAM in my opinion (by a slight margin) but it's more expensive. I
suspect that it's from much cleaner stock than the Hahnemuhe version
but you pay for it in terms of number of sheets. It's worth for those
special prints! :)

slight correction to my last post:

I meant that the Hahnemuhe PR probably comes from cleaner stock than
the EAM. Which is not dissing the EAM. I do really think that the EAM
is competent but it has a rather subdued look in its tonality
relative to the luxury beauty of PR!
