Clogged Epson 1280

Clogged Epson 1280

2002-08-27 by daintreeriver2002

Hi All,

Well it´s finally (after 3 weeks) happened to me! I turned on my
Epson 1280 (I'm using MIS VM inks in pre-filled cartridges) and ran a
quick nozzle check, which showed some banding with the black ink.
After doing a head cleaning, the next nozzle check was worse and now,
after 4-5 cleanings with some prints of the purge pattern imbetween,
I'm getting practically nothing!

I know everyone's written a lot about cleaning the print heads. I'm
a real novice "under the hood" of my printer and don't know exactly
how to go about it. Should I first just let the printer sit overnite?
I printed yesterday just fine, and the cartridges are about 1/2
full. I'd really appreciate some advice and a list of steps to
follow if I do need to clean the heads myself. (I'm not even sure
how one gets them in the correct position to clean!)

Thank you!

Bob

The cart may not be as full as you think it is. If you've a spare,
swap an see what you get then. I've had some carts that didn't
perform as expected (my me or the Epson tools) WRT longevity.

umm -- i've been using MIS VM cartridges for about 6 months -- with very
little problem

though i had the same scneario happen to me once --

i fixed it in 5 minutes by throwing new MIS VM cartridges into the 1280 --
even though the epson driver said there should still beink in them -- (i had
let them sit for about a week with no printing prior to the "cloggin" ) ..

have you tried brand new cartridges --?

in my case i was close ot being empty --

Press the yellow button, this should bring the heads to the left. Unplug
the printer. Squirt with a syringe, a mixture of ammonia/water, 1:9
directly into the open nipples of the printhead. Wipe it down, and do it
again. Wipe it down, clean the area with q timps, and replace the
cartridges. Do about 4 or 5 head cleanings. This SHOULD get you clear printheads.

Jerry

To clean under the bottom of the printheads:

While the cartridges are all the way left, dip a paper towel into the
ammonia/water solution, or fantastik, or glass plus, etc. wring out.
fold over and over until you get a towel that is about 1 inch by 12
inches. Tuck it into the channel that the print heads run along. Drag
the heads back and forth by hand over the towel. Repeat with 2 or 3 more
paper towels. This will clean the bottom of the printheads. You'll still
have to run about 4 or 5 more headcleanings with the epson software to
get everything working normally again.

Jerry,

Thanks a lot for the information about how to clean the printheads. I'm
going to be out tonight, so if the problem doesn't clear up in the morning
after the printer has set overnight, I'll go out to buy the requisite syringe
and ammonia.

Thank you to Tim and Ricardo, also. Unless they were misfilled, the
cartridges should have plenty of ink in them, because both were new last
Friday and I haven't done much printing since. If I do take out the current
cartridges, I can't put them back in, right?

Thanks again for the information!

Bob

yes, you can put them back in. That is one of the "Advantages" of using
epson inks with their chips. If you ar using 3rd party cartridges, they
still have to have the 1280 chip in them, or they wouldn't work at all.

Bob,

It sounds like you are running out of or have run out of ink in the black
cartridge. There was a recent post that MIS has had some problems of late
with their cartridges. If you have a back-up black give that a try and if
that solves your problem, call MIS and see if you can get a replacement for
the one that failed.

Martin,

This morning, after running a quick purge file through to first confirm that
I wasn't getting any ink out of almost all of the jets, I replaced my "color"
cartridge. Next test print, showed ink from this cartridge but very little
from Black cartridge, so I replaced it with my one spare. It's all working
now, so you were right about MIS having a problem with their cartridges. I
called them just a bit ago and they're replacing both cartridges for free. I
hope these come properly filled! I may have to take the plunge to go with a
CIS soon, but I want to wait to hear more about ImagePrint and the 2200
printer.

Thanks!

Bob,

I'm glad the problem was that simple and happy to hear that you got good
support from MIS. Watch those cartridge costs though. If you wait too long,
you will wind up spending the equivalent of a CIS pretty quickly.

thats exactly what happened to me -- is spent about $150 in cartridges for
MIS VM -and MIS VM sepia before i finally decided to go with a CIS from MIS
for their regular VM inks..

.. though the money wasn't really wasted because i needed to be sure that i
liked the results from the ink .. and wanted to try the differences between
MIS-VM and MIS-VM-Sepia...

Martin,

I was part way through a VM cartridge when my 1280 choked. I thought, I
like the colors, let's go for it. So I called MIS right away and ordered a
CFS. When it comes next week, I trust I can do some real printing.

Glenn,

I never used the MIS preloaded cartridges but when I do ink testing with
hand loaded cartridges the 1280 seems to have more problems with clogs than
with the CIS installed. MIS does seem to be having a problem at the moment
with their 1280 cartridges.

Way back in January I used a set of MIS-filled carts in a new 1280.
The Y ran dry prematurely. I tried bringing it to MIS attention then,
but never got a response from them.

However, I got some free cart vacuum filling stuff from them shortly
thereafter- sort of a quasi-bata tester I guess. From then on until
July I used my OWN vacuum filled carts by buying virgin empties and
filling VM bulk ink into them. The price of a set of carts works out
to be about $27 not counting the vacuum kit cost, roughly half price
of a set of MIS filled carts. $$$, but I wanted to do an extended
trial of VM ink without the variables of a CIS/CFS contributing to
clogging. And I was waiting for the MIS F16 resetter to be released.

The only problem I ever had with using my own filled carts was
occasionally when inserting a new cart I'd have to clear air out of
the head (the symptoms were sputtering of ink blobs on page that
cleared quickly..not due to dirt under head, and a brief period of
nozzles not printing). It all cleared with first doing two
cleaning cycles then printing a purge page or two and then the carts
worked flawlessly until they ran out. So my experience
generally differs from Martin's. I have heard that Paul, filling carts
for his 1160, does not even have the problems starting up a cart that
I had.

For a month I've been running the CFS system, checking nozzles twice a
day. So far, I really can't say that the CFS is anymore reliable or
less so than using carts, they give about the same frequency of good
nozzle checks, with the exception that I don't have the problem upon
first insertion of cart that I mentioned above.

My own personal recommendation for someone who absolutely must
experiment with different inks and so has a good reson to use carts,
is not to buy them from MIS but fill them yourself. If you are
careful they will be very reliable. I have a detailled pdf on vacuum
filling instructions for the 1280 in the files sections of this group.

Jim,

Thanks for your message on cartridges for the 1280. Maybe I need to consider
filling them myself. I've still been having some problems with the next
batch of pre-filled from MIS. Yesterday, I would get one great 10x14 and
then if I didn't do a nozzle cleaning, one of the jets would be clogged and
next print would have to be aborted. It was very frustrating and after only
8 decent prints it appears that I'm down to maybe 20% remaining in the carts!
I am trying to get my hands on a syringe today, so that I can do the head
cleaning bit with ammonia.... Maybe that will help. Halving the cost of the
ink would be great, though. I need to log to the MIS site and see what the
vacuum kit costs.

Not just halving the cost. You cut it by about 80 percent.

Re: [Digital BW] Clogged Epson 1280

Yes, although I don't really know what the MIS problem is since I'm
assuming after the clog clears it again prints for awhile. My MIS
filled cart just plain old ran out of y ink before the chip registered
"out" and stayed not printing.

Assuming there is no problem with the bulk ink or the virgin carts
themselves, my next guess would be that they didn't get a good vacuum
seal when pulling in the ink- when I did this myself, I and others
found that not tightening the needle in the luer-lok syringe end was
the culprit. This would introduce a lot of bubbly ink into the cart-
and a situation where the cart cuts out for periods. Could be a lot of
other things causing problems as well, who knows?
