Use 1.8 gamma on a Mac, and 2.2 on a PC. But if you are going with the
MIS VM inks, you need to convert to a RGB file before printing, and Use
one of Paul Roark's curves. You can then get anything from a cold tone
to a warm tone.

I think its Trinitron, or is that what you meant by mac badged? Anyhoo,
1.8 works fine for me.

Re: [Digital BW] Time to dive in

2002-08-29 by Martin Wesley

K2,

With Paul's curve for the 1160 and VM inks you will be converting your
grayscale files to sRGB before applying the curve you want to use. It is
very important that the gamma of your grayscale working space match the
gamma of the RGB printing space. So you need to use Gray Gamma 2.2 to keep
things consistent.

If your normal color working space is Adobe RGB you can give that a try. I
have not noticed any significant difference on the 1280 between using sRGB
and Adobe RGB for this workflow.

Well again from the Mac colour experts - only monitors with a mac badge on
the front. If anyone wants info on colour spaces and profiling the Prodig
list is an amazing resource. http://www.prodig.org
This gamma thing re different platforms was gone into in some depth

Martin,

I thought that Paul's workflow posted on the MIS web site called for setting
the gamma to 1.8?

Julian, Most if not all Mac Monitors are or were made by Sony. Hence "Trinitron".

Re: [Digital BW] Time to dive in

2002-08-30 by Julian Thomas

yeah I know but only the ones with the Apple badge on the front are designed
for a 1.8 gamma - I only know this because of the Mac experts on Prodig.
check the archives their and you'll find apple's explanation - I think!
These folk don't work in a closed loop system but send work on their system
to others to work on as well so colour management for them is essential.
Anyway - I am but an egg

Re: [Digital BW] Time to dive in

2002-08-30 by Jerry Olson

I have a Mitsubishi with a trinitron tube, and I have always used 1.8
gamma. If I used 2.2 I'd have to reprofile everything, no?

What would be the advantage to using 2.2?

Bob,

That is for the gamma setting in the Epson driver and does not apply to your
Photoshop working space. Also the 1.8 Mac vs. 2.2 PC debate has nothing to
do with Paul's workflow for the curves with VM inks. If the gamma of your
grayscale workspace does not match the gamma of your color workspace you
will have problems with Paul's workflow.

Re: [Digital BW] Time to dive in

Martin,

Thanks for the clarification. I think my workspaces are set up correctly for
using Paul's VM curves. I've got PS& and I'm using a PC. Under RGB the
setting sRGB IEC61966-2.1 is selected. Gray Gamma is 2.2 and there's a Dot
Gain of 20%. I haven't made any changes selecting the Advanced Mode either.
Should I be okay with this?

Thanks.

Bob

Hi Jerry and Julian-

Jerry, AFAIK, you would only have to profile your monitor to a 2.2
workspace. In my system, I use Optical to profile my monitor (also a
Mitsubishi ;^), using Adobe98 as the target profile- with a 2.2 gamma and
D65 color temp. My default PS workspaces are A-98 for RGB and 2.2 for GS.

I have never seen a convincing argument for or against 1.8 or 2.2- for me
it's primarily one of compatibility- most modern equipment (recent scanners,
digicams, etc.), seem to be set to a 2.2 space by default, so in cases where
no profile is applied, or is unknown, a 2.2 space will result in fewer
"upsets." On the other hand, when I scan with a older Scitex scanner
(designed for a Mac system), I assume the gamma to be 1.8, and set my
monitor to match until I convert to a 2.2 space in PS.

But what do I know... I'll wait 'til some helpful soul shows me why I'm
half-baked ;^)
