If you wanted to try a 2.2 gamma setting to see the difference between it and the 1.8, where would you set it? In the photoshop color settings page, or the epson final print dialogue box, or in one of the earlier dialogue box? There's at least 3 places you can set it. J

--- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., Jerry Olson Jerry, I have been setting the gamma in the PS color settings dialogue. I have not thought about the print settings and need to check that. Where is the third place? I should think that they would all have to be consistent. I still wonder which is preferred -- 1.8 or 2.2? Steve, In the PS color settings "Gray" should be set to "Gray gamma 2.2" and RGB set to Adobe RGB or sRGB so that your grayscale and color working spaces have the same gamma. If there is a gamma setting in the Epson print driver it should be set to 1.8. Paul has all the details listed out at this location if you haven't found it before: http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/workflow_roark.html Martin Wesley http://www.borderless-photos.de/guests.html ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephen Kobrin" <skobrin@...> To: <DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Saturday, October 05, 2002 9:05 AM Subject: Re: [Digital BW] gamma setting > --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@y..., Jerry Olson > > Jerry, > > I have been setting the gamma in the PS color settings dialogue. Everybody says 1.8 for mac, but never says why. I guess I'll have to run a couple comparison tests.... Jerry Stephen Kobrin wrote:

For the mac, calibrate your monitor at 1.8, but work in 2.2 for your grayspace. Ideally you want to tag the original scan with a 2.2 space. If you are scanning in RGB and then converting, scan in Adobe 98 (which is gamma 2.2) and then convert to grayscale. Likewise with a digital camera shoot in Adobe 98...or the native gamma 2.2 colorspace for your camera (e.g., Nikon Adobe 98). Make sure your colorspace for grayscale in photoshop is set for gamma 2.2...then it will automatically set gamma 2.2 when you do the rgb to grayscale conversion. The rgb workflows work best with gamma 2.2. I personally use Imageprint, which will technically work with any gamma that you tag to the file, because it is color managed, but I work in 2.2 and get perfect screen to print matching. For the piezo plugin you may have to then convert from gamma 2.2 to a custom dot density function to get final good matching. Robert

Robert - Why do you advise calibrating the monitor at a gamma of 1.8 if you're working in 2.2 settings for Photoshop, etc.? Stephen Petegorsky petegorsky@... www.spphoto.com

That is the standard recommendation for macintosh systems. Gamma 2.2 for PC systems. Every reference on color management that I've seen has suggested the same. The actual grayspace that you tag to the file is technically up to you...but I find that I like gamma 2.2 the best. Robert On 10/6/02 7:27 AM, "Stephen Petegorsky" <petegorsky@...> wrote:

Just to add - the monitor gamma seems to rely on whether it is a Mac-badged monitor or not. If it has the Apple logo on it it will be designed for a 1.8 gamma - if it is any other brand -r egardless of the platform it will be designed for a 2.2 gamma but check your monitor manual. I've now seen three Mac systems with Sony monitors all on 2.2 gamma. Thanks for the reference. I just recalibrated my monitors last night. I'm working on a dual G4 mac with a Lacie Electron Blue 22 and a 17" Apple Studio Display LCD. I found that switching to Gamma 2.2 during calibration is giving me much closer screen to print match than Gamma 1.8 did. I had been having a lot of trouble getting the LCD tamed down for print proofing...in fact I had been doing all of my proofing on the Lacie. It now appears that I will be able to work on the LCD. As I mentioned before I work in Gamma 2.2 grayspace for editing...so it appears that the old Gamma 1.8 for monitor on macs is no longer an absolute. Robert
