Printer Squeak...?

Printer Squeak...?

2002-12-21 by Cleavis <lyonscox@cableone.net>

I'm making a printer work very, very hard for me right now with near
continuous printing couple of hours at a time. (This is when the CIS
feels really good). Have several days to go on this project and
would rather NOT burn out the printer in the process.

It's developed a 'trill' as the print head moves from right to left,
but not the other way. I suspect the silver guide bar could use some
lube but don't know what kind? Have some sewing machine oil that I
could apply minimially but hesitating for some comment here.

Suggestions welcome & thanks in advance.

I have had good luck using marine winch grease applied with a Qtip
swab; the brand I'm using now is Lewmar Geargrease. Lubricants for
the marine environment seem to apply, hold up and function well for
this purpose - plus they're more expensive than the usual varieties
which makes them a natural match for quadtone printing.

I used clipper oil (for horse clippers...) and it seemed to work with my 860. A tiny drop did the trick. I'd bet any light machine oil would work.

Try this:

Remove the big stack of paper you have there and try it with perhaps
one or two sheets in the tray only.

Still have the squeak?

Yep...It really seems associated with the head movement, and only in
one direction (away from Park). Kinda like the wobbly wheel on a
grocery cart - mildly annoying but not broken.

I would prefer to use a dry lube and think a trip to True Value might
produce something to use. Reason being is the bar, if using any
oils, would accumulate paper dust over time and add friction (I
presume).

Thanks for the replies all...still working on it (slowly).

Well this morning stopped at True Value and picked up some dry lube.
Went with a "Panef brand white stick lubricant with silicone" for
about $2.99.

Went with the white _stick_ thinking I might be able to apply it more
easily, Less spill possibility. I think the other kinds (graphite,
etc.) are more of a powder?? and I was concerned that I would get it
all over the innards of the printer.

To get around that 'platen' bar I first wiped it with a kleenex
(convenience only) then ran the white stick across it as well as I
could. Smeared it around the bar with my fingers some, then pushed
the print head back and forth a couple of times.

Turned it back on and ran a test print...no squeak. Seems to have
done the trick.

Sincerely,
Cleavis
