Roger,

glad you find this list useful! We started it precisely for that kind of self-help.
Hope you spread the word to like-minded folks (digital BW minded, that is!).

I bought an 1160 last week from refurbdepo.com for $215.95.
They may still have them. Mine hasn't come in yet (this is my second one), but
I have no indication of delays to this date.

Bear in mind that they are not all created equal. Mine (the first one) has been
flawless - printing with a CIS and piezoBW inks since last November. But I
have heard of others with various problems. As long as it's new and
warranted by Epson, you can expect them to replace it if it's a bad apple. The
advice from inkjetmall is to try it first using Epson inks. If it clogs beyond repair
down the line (very unlikely given all the tricks to unclog), Epson may still take
care of it. Worth taking a look at inkjetmall techsup tips.

I strongly recommend the CIS from nomorecarts. In fact I don't ever want to
see another cart in my life. It's just a big rip-off (price wise, regardless of
whose inks are in there) and they don't work so well with piezoBW from what
others say.

Roger,

The general gist of past posts to this and other lists seems to be: Try,
Try, Try Again when looking for an 1160. Yes, they are out of production,
but still people report them appearing on refurbdepot, Epson web site,
Auction sites (watch out for overpriced printers!) etc. They ARE out there.

Of course, this is all what I've read - there are still bucket loads of them
in the UK!

B&W Inkjet Printer Choice was [Digital BW] Digest Number 8

2001-08-01 by mwesley250@earthlink.net

Roger,

This is a tough and recurring problem. Epson seems to be cycling
their printer models faster than the alternative ink companies can
keep up. At this point I personally would not go on a hunt for a
printer that is out of production. I did it last December for a new
1200 and the situation seems to have gotten worse.

If I was in your position, I think that I would do this.

Buy a 1280, a set of one of the new MIS Hextone inks
http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/quadtone.html
and a CIS (Continuous Ink Supply) from
http://www.nomorecarts.com/ and start printing with that.

When ConeTech comes out with their set-up for the 1280 you could
convert over if you wanted to by just replacing the cartridge portion
of the CIS and the inks.

Or you could convert your 1200 to B&W and buy at 1280 for your color.

Welcome!

Martin Wesley

Where are you? I'm in the UK, and the other day I spotted that Dabs.com
still had them available.

Hope that helps.

Roger,

Victoria's message made me think to check Epson's main website and
various country sites. The 1160 appears in their product line up
everywhere I checked except the US. So it looks like the 1160 is
still in production but not for sale in the US. You could probably
get a new one from Europe or Australia. Both the UK and Australia
sites listed retail web stores.

Did not see the 1200 anywhere but it may have a different model
number.

Of course you would have to pay more in shiping and some import duty.
One other thing to watch out for would be electrical requirements.
Most of Europe is on 250V, 50Hz rather than 125V, 60Hz but a lot of
electronics have switches to select the voltage.

Question for any EU 1160 owners. Does your 1160 have a voltage
selection switch and what plug adapters came with it?

I'm in Australia, not the EU, but this might help:

My 1160, according to the label near the power inlet, needs 220-240V at 50-60Hz
(and the Setup Guide says 'Caution: It is not possible to change the printer's
voltage. If the rated voltage and your outlet voltage do not match, contact your
dealer for assistance. Do not plug in the power cord'.)

Which does not seem very useful to our American cousins....

Cheers

Peter,

Thanks for that bit of info. Should still be possible for use in the
U.S. with a step tranformer. The 50-60HZ is okay and a 120V to 240V
transformer would not be too hard to find or overly expensive.

Roger,

While possible, the overseas sourcing seems a bit complicated. If you
don't find a refurb unit in the US, I would still think about the
1280.

EU Epson prices, dealers, voltage; was: Digest Number 8

2001-08-03 by ruhrfoto@yahoo.de

Victoria, Roger et al,

here comes a list with some European dealers, which sell
Epson 1160. The price is about $ 285 plus shipping . It includes
16% taxes in the EU.
If you want to go to the original website it is: www.geizhals.at,
which compares different resellers and their prices
(searchfunction: 1160).

I´m sorry, but neither my European 1160 nor the 1270 nor the
3000 have got switches to change voltage. All run 220-240 V at
50-60 Hz.

Whether you should buy an 1160 or an 1280 should depend on
the ink you want to use. If you use the Piezo/Cone inks you
should buy an 1160, but what about the 1280 and Pauls Variable
Hexatone set from MIS, sounds very interesting too.

Great idea Martin.

I couldn't find a voltage switch, but the sticker on the back says 220-240v
~ 50-60hz 0.2A, if that makes any sense to you. :)

Victoria, Bernd,

Thank you for checking. While not the easiest way to go if 1160's can
be found in the U.S., the non-U.S. sources could become a way get a
new 1160 as the supply dindles here. In fact here is a great
opportunity for a "gray market" importer!

Epsons from abroad, was: Re: [Digital BW] Digest Number 8

I fear there would be liability risks here, unless the importer wanted
to rework the printers to work on US voltage. I also wonder if the
printers here are just stock moving slower through the pipeline,
rather than new printers supplied by Epson.
