Sorry,

I'm probably at the end of the wrong pipeline. If I order the scanner now
from another source I can have it within 3 days. Anyway I have paid for it
already elsewhere but that organisation probably stacks orders and gets a
rebate for larger quantities so their price is lower.
The price isn't worth the waiting I have to admit. If it isn't here next
week I'll cancel the order and get my money back.
Better check Norman Koren's site as there must be a European that receives
and tests it before I get it.

There is a first report of a user at Norman Koren' site:

http://www.normankoren.com/Tutorials/Epson_3200_Bruck.html

A friend in Amsterdam received his yesterday. "Very fast" were the first
word on the telephone.

There is a very comprehesive review at http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Scanners/Epson_3200/page_1.htm. It does infact scan 4x5, a friend loaned me one and I've been scanning 4x5 T-Max with it. So far no neuton rings and T-Max is the worst for neuton rings I've found. I'm going to be very interested to see how the 3200 compairs with a Microtek 1800f.

Epson 2400 vs 3200 scanner

2003-07-08 by David Jackson

I seem to recall reading that, except for speed, the 2400 and 3200 are
essentially the same in terms of scanning performance. Is this correct?

I can buy a new 2400 for $178. This would be a low-cost, first scanner for
me which I would like to match up with Vuescan for scanning 4x5 negatives.
Speed is not an issue.

Any thoughts?

Check to make sure the 2400 has a light lid and holders that will do 4x5. I
think the 2400's light lid is smaller than the 2450/3200 light lid. From
the tests I have read, you gain somewhere in the range of 10% better
resolution with the 3200 over the 2450. I am assuming the 2400 uses the
same optical system as the 2450, but that is just a guess. With the 3200,
you also get improved negative holders.

The 2400 only has a thin trannie adapter for 35mm film. I think you
are thinking of the 2450 vs the 3200.

The 2450 is a good scanner. Almost as good as the 3200. I have owned both and it's an incremental difference, not a major one.

Are you sure you are both talking about the same scanner ?

Original question was about the Epson 2400 which is a valid model
number and quite different from the Epson 2450.

David,

The 2400 will be excellent for your 4 x 5's You won't need the resolution
of the 3200 scanner for 4 x 5. They are not the same - see the reviews on
my web page.

Re: Epson 2400 vs 3200 scanner - PART TWO

2003-07-09 by David Jackson

Thanks to everyone (Doug, Alan, Richard, Russ, and Andre) who took time to
reply to my original question.

I'm going to have to double-check to be sure about the 2400 vs 2450 model.
I'm pretty sure that it was the 2400 for $178, but, actually, when I wrote
my question to the group, I was mistakenly THINKING of the 2450.

I can afford the additional $ to get the 3200 over the 2400 and probably
will go that route.

NEW QUESTION: The 3200 seems a little long in the tooth. Does anyone have
any info or rumors about an update or new model from Epson before I put
down my hard-earned cash?

I've read some comment that, with so many people going to digital cameras,
there is no longer the drive to develop improved consumer-grade scanners
for the market and that the roll-out of new models was expected to slow.

Many thanks for your time and assistance.

David Jackson
