Bernd, it's true. they are the same printer.

I get excellent results using the VM inks and Paul's curves.

Martin, Jerry,
I just downloaded the 1280 driver from the Epson website.
It doesn´t run my 1290.
Have to be patient until Paul has got my 1290 21step-prints.
... we will see.

Bernd,

Well that certainly settles the question and makes me really wonder
about Epson. Why would they do this?

Hopefully it is a straightforward step change between the curves.
Have you tried manipulating Paul's curves yourself?

This also raises the question of whether or not the upcoming Piezo
for the 1280 will work on the 1290.

Let us know how it works out.

RE: [Digital BW] Re:1280 isn´t 1290 (?) wa s: which printer?

2001-09-25 by Nij

Bernd,

I am in the camp (without definite confirmation at this time) that the
printers are the same barring:
1) Power supply;
2) Paper-edge sponge thinggies for edge-to-edge printing;
3) Firmware identity.

It does not surprise me that the 1280 driver would therefore not function
with a 1290, as, regardless of whether or not the printers are 'the same'
they are identified differently for software control of edge-to-edge.

All said without any definitive confirmation from anyone who might really
know!

My best reasoning for the last point is that, when downloading the latest
drivers from the UK sites for just about any printer, they come in at
virtually (exactly???) the same size - yet they will only work with a
specific printer. Logically, 90%+ of the driver code must be exactly the
same, the only differences will be: imgaes displayed in dialogs, language
control, and printer features; colour management profiles.

But of course, I always make an arse of myself when I 'assume' and try and
apply logic to what other companies do with computers :)

Best regards,
Nij

Sorry Bernd, The Printers are the same, but the DRIVERS aren't!

My mistake.

Also, I suppose the voltage is different...

Re:1280 isn´t 1290 (?) was: which printer?

Jerry,

I think you are probably right in terms of the mechanics of the
printers but if the firmware is different, then electronically they
are different printers. It sounds like the board level bios is
different. Having worked around the edges of the printer industry,
the 1280's and 1290's are probably being assembled in different
factories and may have enough minor variations in board level
components to cause problems.

I all honesty this still surprises me. If I work with a standard
color file in Photoshop so that it prints well on a 1280 using Epson
inks I would expect that if I sent that file to Bernd to print with
Epson inks on the same paper in his 1290 that the file would print
rather closely to the original and only require some minor tweaking.

The fact that we are seeing these differences does not speak highly
of Epson's efforts to have good color management across their
printers. This once again points to the need for some good quad
profiling either in stand-alone software or as a service. Reasonably
priced of course. <<g>>

Martin
