I've argued with Jerry so often over the last three or four years over print colour, Gen 5 black longevity, digital cam sharpness etc it became as reassuring as a spat with a life-long acquaintance. BTW has anyone heard from Austin recently??? Julian

To have Jerry touched me professionally has helped me grow as an individual. He has gone "above and beyond the call of duty" when helping me "off-line" on his own personal time. Sharing his knowledge and expertise is a true test of a mans "metal". Daniel Elghanayan Cleveland Ohio

Carolyn, I will compile and print out the various messages regarding Jerry passing that have come my way on and off the list, and send them to his mother. If anyone wants to add anything just post it here or send it to me in the next day or so. Martin

I've been on this list for about a year, and have learned that not all contributors provide information or perspective of value to me at my level of experience. But I always read Jerry's messages - even when they didn't seem to be on a subject that had a direct bearing on something I was doing or thinking about at the time, I found that I got something worthwhile out of them. He will be missed. Cheers, Kip Babington

I am so sad about Jerry. Just the other day, I looked at his website for the first time in a couple of years and realized again how gorgeous his photos were. Many times in the past when I had an ink, paper, or Macintosh problem, I emailed Jerry, and he was always so helpful! He will be missed greatly. Barbara White

I well remember seeing Jerry's photos in the Browning Gallery in Grand Forks during the years I lived there. After I retired and moved to New Mexico I never thought for a moment that a North Dakota art connection would reopen. Jerry was a font of knowledge which he willingly shared. Despite the almost furious arguments that sometimes opened up on the list, Jerry was never less than a gentleman.
I will treasure the prints I have of his from the exchange; some I can't read others I am in awe of but all are the product of a talented artist and supreme craftsman. I will certainly miss having him as a guru to whom the dumbest question could be asked and a thoughtful and useful reply the consistant answer.

Wow, I can't beieve Jerry is gone! I think he more than anybody inspired me to demand and expect a lot from digital output. I found the Epson-Leben list with a hope digital BW would be worth playing with and found Jerry was already making and exhibiting high quality digital work. It gave me hope. Before embarking on my first ink/workflow combo I asked Jerry to send me a small print so I could see what to expect. He sent me four 8.5x11 signed exhibition quality prints. So when Jerry proclaimed "the inks are too warm and the blacks are not black enough" I thought "goddamn it, somebody give Jerry the bloody inks he needs!" Over time I tried a lot of the things I knew Jerry liked. They weren't always right for me, but I have a few Olsons and whatever Jerry used it sure did work for him. He could be stubborn, he could be combative, but he was always humble, always sincere, and always about making great prints, which as often as not, he'd give away for free. Jerry was a great guy, a wimsical and imaginative photographer, a superb printer, and an awesome list member. I miss him already. Todd Flashner

The memory of following Jerry's posts over the past couple years had the flavor of following the Drinking Gourd. Checking in with the North Star never fails to reassure me that all's right for the world. Jerry had that North Star quality. His dedication to excellence, his passion for the photographic process, his gracious willingness to help others, his instinctive generosity were as fixed and reliable as the pole star. My condolences to his mother. And I hope someone will take care of those cats. If they did indeed own him, they must be accustomed to lounging where and when they please. How did their late companion keep cat hair off his arresting prints? Best thoughts, Carol Craven [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
