Sorry for this late reply, but this message slipped through my eyeball
scan. What you say about The Gimp not being able to access the
quadtone driver is true.

There are however three other ways of printing outside of The Gimp
(the case in the following program names is not the actual, but you
should be able to find them):

- xpp
- gtklp
- qtcups

Try them all and select your favourite. All three work for me under
Debian 3.0 (woody) and Gimp-print 4.2.4 and Cups 1.1.18 .

Hope it works for you.

Thanks! Now I got one step further. Now I can select a file and I get
access to all the Quadtone settings. But it seems to ignore those
settings I make when I actually print the image. It uses my settings for
resolution and dithering, but ignore the curve settings.

I'm not really sure what to do next... Are there any other settings that
are important to get this to work?

Daniel

The curves are quite probably in the wrong file. Roy is using OS X on
a Mac. The different Linux distros also vary in where it is put. I had
to edit the setup file to get it right for woody. The correct file
for the curves could be
/etc/cups/quadtone/ or
/usr/share/cups/quadtone/

Also OS X uses
/usr/libexec/cups/filter/
and Debian has no libexec in usr .

If this does not solve your problem, I can let you have my changes.
Please let me know - offline if you prefer.

Good luck

Problem solved!

I got some very good help from Reinier on and off list. It turns out
there were three problems:

1. The Gimp overrides the quadtone settings and uses settings and
drivers of its own. I solved this by running lp directly from the
command line and also by using gtklp which is basically a graphical
interface for lp.

2. The variable CUPSBINARY had to be changed to /usr/lib/cups/filter in
several files.

3. I had to set read access on /usr/share/cups/quadtone/ and all its
contents - This was very important, as it would otherwise just ignore
the curve settings entirely.

I'm running my first tests now, and it looks very promising. I'm getting
the most dotless prints I've seen since I installed the Ultratones in my
2100. I'll report back when I've had a chance to do some more testing.

Just in case anyone ever runs into the same problem:

When printing from Photoshop in Windows to QuadToneRIP using the Adobe
Postscript Drivers I found that I had to set output profile to 'Same as
source' instead of 'Postscript color management'. Otherwise the shadow
areas would get completely and uncorrectably blocked up, no matter what
curve I used in QuadToneRIP.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
