Cheryl;

It should be noted that the real problem is with the Inks in the 2200.
If they did not exhibit such metamerism there would be no need for
special drivers / RIPs to try and work around the inks deficiencies.

? about the 2200 and metamerism...

2003-06-08 by Cheryl

hi - I am new the the group and did scan the archives, so I apologize if I am
being redundant here.

I am running OS X 10.2.6 with my Epson 2200 and no matter what I do, I am
getting an awful pink cast to my BW prints. (of course they look terrific in direct
sunlight). Is there ANYTHING I can do with my current setup to fix this
problem? I can buy a better RIP if that will help. I do still have my G3 with OS9
that I am considering turning into a print server - but hopefully I won't have to.

I am confused if the problem is OS X - Epson driver related (I have tried gimp
print with no better results). Would setting up OS9 as a print server even help?

Is it a color management problem?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you oh pioneers of digital BW!

Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,

unfortunately there's nothing you can do with the Epson driver that will
cure your problem. Since you're on a mac your best bet is probably to
try the free OpenPrintMaker from this address:
http://www.bowhaus.com/inkjetcontrol/

People here seem to be getting wonderful results with it.

RE: [Digital BW] ? about the 2200 and metamerism...

2003-06-08 by Daniel Staver

I would say it's more of a driver problem than an ink problem, since all
of the inks needed to get a perfectly neutral tone without metamerism
are already present in the printer.

The Epson driver seems to use large amounts of every color in the
printer to achieve neutral, which we all know works very poorly. The
alternative rip's and drivers will use mostly black and light black with
only tiny amounts of cyan and magenta to cool down the warm cast of the
blacks.

If you've ever made a 'neutral' print with the Epson driver with gray in
the yellow postition (I have) you'll see just how much color inks it
really uses - the print is bright purple.

In my experience It's virtually impossible to get b&w without a color
cast from a color printer using the Epson driver, even with a custom
paper profile. On the other hand, ImagePrint from ColorByte produces
spot-on neutral b&w prints, and also has a TintPicker which allows
subtle "toning" of prints. Although ImagePrint can be difficult to set
up it's easy to use thereafter.

It's the yellow ink in particular. Any RIP that allows you to print without
using yellow in B&W prints will eliminate the metamerism. I've been using
ImagePrint for some time now with excellent results.

For color images, you're pretty much stuck with the metamerism. ImagePrint
attempts to solve it for color images by providing profiles for each paper
using different target lighting: Tungsten, Daylight, Flourescent. Of
course, that doesn't help if you'll be viewing the prints in mixed or
changing lighting. I usually resort to test prints using each of the target
light profiles and then pick the profile that gives the best overall
results.

Soon (Calumet expects to have it June 13), Lyson's CavePaint inks will be
available for the 2200. I'm curious to hear how their yellow ink performs.
Also, has anyone tested the MIS ultrachrome clone inks?
