Installed QuadTOneRIP v2.0 on my Mac OS X 10.2.6 I can print letter size images but no other sizes (even though they show up in the list) Curiously, in my Print-GIMP-Errorlog I always see the following: E [15/Aug/2003:17:06:42 -0400] Filter "iProofRIPX" cannot be found! E [15/Aug/2003:17:06:42 -0400] Filter "pdftops" cannot be found! What does this mean? Looks like I didn't install something? MJS

It would appear the two things are unrelated: I *CAN* print on any size paper via GIMP -- just not through Photoshop, which I've been told is a carbon-based application and thus cannot take full advantage of the MacOS. I will be curious to see of PS 8 fixes this. So my workflow for the time being is: - edit to my heart's content in Photoshop - proof inside of Photoshop using the QuadToneRIP/GIMP at lettersize - when I'm ready to print larger, then save a copy of the file as JPEG - open it in Preview - print using the QuadToneRIP/GIMP to any size paper I want But my question remains: anyone know what the two log errors (mentioned below) mean? mjs --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "J Michael Sullivan" <michael@h...> wrote:

Michael, I've made prints (2200 printer) on both letter size and super B size papers via QTR in Photoshop. Is it just custom (user defined) paper sizes that you can't use? Carl

you installed iproofX (maybe the demo) it was not uninstalled properly - for some reason they conflict with other. I think iproof has an uninstall routine (can't remember) if that is the case - reinstall iproof then use the uninstaller then install gimp again. I'm also getting strange messages in my error log. I'm running QTR 2 on my RedHat 9 box. Printer is an Epson 2200 on the parallel port. I'm printing from a Win2000 machine which is using the printer via Samba/CUPS. I'm trying to go through the Ink Calibration procedure described in the documentation, and I'm encountering this in my log: I [16/Aug/2003:13:17:08 -0400] Job 44 queued on 'QTR2200' by 'justin'. I [16/Aug/2003:13:17:08 -0400] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops (PID 1032) for job 44. I [16/Aug/2003:13:17:08 -0400] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster (PID 1033) for job 44. I [16/Aug/2003:13:17:08 -0400] Started filter /usr/lib/cups/filter/quadrastertoprinter (PID 1034) for job 44. I [16/Aug/2003:13:17:08 -0400] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/epson (PID 1035) for job 44. E [16/Aug/2003:13:17:35 -0400] [Job 44] Back-channel read error - Input/output error! This is not a fatal error because the job still gets printed. My wedges all look about half as dense as they should, i.e. 100% black looks more like 50% black. I turned up my density all the way, check out lpoptions: job-sheets=none,none copies=1 number-up=1 wrap=false position=top-left stpDither=Adaptive stpImageType=Continuous stpInkType=PhotoCMYK7 InputSlot=Auto MediaType=Matte Resolution=1440x1440hq2 stpBrightness=1000 stpContrast=1000 stpCyan=1000 stpDensity=2000 stpGamma=1000 stpMagenta=1000 stpSaturation=1000 stpYellow=1000 PageSize=A4 ripBlend=100 ColorModel=QTCAL ripCurve1=EEM_2200-calib ripCurve2=- Maybe it's a workflow problem? I'm basically just opening inkpattern.psd, abandoning the color profile in the document, and printing it from the (Same as source) Adobe Gama 2.2 space. This is terribly frustrating, as the wedges look quite neutral despite their lack of density. Examination with a loupe (8x) shows A LOT of white at 100%. The only other idea I had was I was either using the wrong curve or it was installed incorrectly. Daniel suggested I try the ink calibration process. Changing the hardware ink limit from 70 to 100 in the new calibration curve had no affect. The calibration curve was just a copy of one of the included 2200 curves modified sleightly for printer name and the ink limit. Any ideas? J Michael Sullivan wrote:

When you print the inkpattern.psd file to establish ink limits the first time ink limit should be 100 and be sure to set CALIBRATION=YES in the profile and also calibration mode must be specified in the driver. PRINTER=QUAD2200 CURVE_NAME=2200-test CALIBRATION=YES GRAPH_CURVE=YES # # number of inks must be 4, 6, or 7 # the ink limits are percentages # usually they are all the same but they can be individually set # N_OF_INKS=7 DEFAULT_INK_LIMIT=100 LIMIT_K= LIMIT_C=0 LIMIT_M=0 LIMIT_Y=0 LIMIT_LC= LIMIT_LM= LIMIT_LK=

No. I've tried both custom page sizes (e.g. 20"x30") as well as the canned GIMP page sizes that come with a GIMP installation. Nothing other than lettersize will print via Photoshop. However, I can print ANY page size using Preview -- weird isn't it? Any ideas here? Apparently dozens of other GIMP users have the same problem judging from the threads on the GIMP forums. mjs --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Carl Schofield <scho@m...> wrote: > Michael, > > I've made prints (2200 printer) on both letter size and super B size > papers via QTR in Photoshop. hmmm.. you may be right. But I can't remember intalling it. (I can' remember NOT installing it either!!!) I probably did at one time as I was trying all sorts of things a few months back. I have QuadTone RIP installed on my Mac G4 and it is working very well when I print at 1440x720. However on all 3 of my attempts to print at 1440x1440, the printer is literally flooding the page with ink. The page is almost saturated with ink except for areas that are approaching pure white. I can print at all resolutions with the Epson driver without problems. I double checked to make certain I had selected Photograph and not Line Art when making the setup selections. Is anyone else having a similar problem? Is this a Gimp-Print or Ghostscript related issue. So far all my settings have be made through the PS7 print preview and print screens. This is may first experience with Gimp-Print and Ghostscript and I am uncertain how I would make changes there even if I had to do so. Regards, David

Yes, this is a known problem. You should use only the 1440x720 Highest Quality resolution setting. Carl

Carl, Again, thanks for all your help. I not sure that the higher setting really would add anything; I was more interested in testing the limits. Would there be any point to experimenting with a separate set of cool/worm curves with different ink settings to solve the problem or is this just an inherent problem in the way the 2200 functions at the higher resolution settings? David, I also didn't think that the higher res settings would add that much more to print quality so I haven't bothered trying to re-profiling at these settings. I really don't know why the 1440x1440 setting opens the flood gates on the 2200, but it is definitely not suited for this printer with gimp. I may try some of the other dither options- the Eventone one in particular. Carl
