QTR2 - Black Images...

QTR2 - Black Images...

2003-08-31 by Roger L Sopher

I put QTR2 on an old Beige Power Mac mainly to use as a comparator to QTR2
on a Linux box. The installation went as it should and all of the screens
have the content that they should. The profile and curve loading functions
seem to work and files appear in the drop box as they should. I printed a
step wedge that I will measure today but eyeballing it looks pretty good
except maybe a bit wet on the black end when it came out of the printer.

BUT -- when I tried to print a B&W that had previously printed very well
with Piezo I get a virtually black output. (printing done from Photoshop
elements v2). Looking at it, there are a few, very few, areas on the paper
where some detail pokes through but not much.

I tried tweaking the gamma setting but that seemed to have no effect at all
(from 1.0 to 2.0). What should I adjust to cut the amount of ink laid down ?

Thanks

Roger

Roger,

You should be using the "1440x720 Highest Quality" resolution setting
for printing. If you select 1440x1440 you will definitely get wet,
black prints.

Roger,

At what resolution did you print. Carl Schofield confirmed to me, that
"1440 x 720Highest Quality" is the max for QT.

Above 1440x720HQ the ink floods the page.

Regards,

David

Resolution - 1440 X 720. As a test bed I am using an old 860, modified the
canned curve for the 1160 "1160-fs" and went from there.

Have you gone through all the calibration steps? Specifically the ink-limiting step?

Also, are you _positive_ that you are using the correct curve? If you use the "calib"
curve by mistake you will almost definitely get dripping-black output.

(I personally made both of the above mistakes a half-dozen times, so please don't
think I'm being patronizing :) )

It's a known problem with Quadtone Rip that printing with 1440 x 720 gives this
result. If you use 1440 x 720 HQ you will be ok. All other resolutions should be ok
as well.
It's a simple fix.

I tried 720, and 1440 X 700HQ - no go - same problem. However, in printing
I noticed that it appeared that gray tones wer being layed down and then
covered with black... I checked the curve and it is the fs not the
fs-calibrate version. I did the ink limiting calibration.

 "is a puzzlement..."

RE: [Digital BW] QTR2 - Black Images...

2003-08-31 by Roger L Sopher

Remind me to send for membership in the red-faced brigade... I went through
the curve definition file and when I changed it I didn't erase the Y of yes
when I entered calibrate "no" so it said calibrate "yno" That was enough to
bugger it. As the song says "little things mean a lot..."

Printing now is going just fine and I can try to tweak the curve for various
papers.

Thanks to all for their help.
