Quality of UT on the 1280

Quality of UT on the 1280

2003-10-04 by Chris Hargens

Looking at the prices refurbished 1280s are going for, I've been
thinking it might worth getting one as a dedicated BW printer. I'd
like to go the UT route with the printer, but I haven't heard much
about what kind of results people are getting with Paul's curves.
(OTH, I've heard a lot of good things about the UT curves on the
1160.) Also, it seems like clogging can be a problem with the 1280
and the UT inkset. Any advice or suggestions on which way to go would
be appreciated. My other choice would be to get a 2200 and switch
between color and the UT set (filling my own carts).

Chris,

I've been using and liking the UT inks with Paul's curves on my 1280
very much. I switched from the VM inks and would like to go to a CIS
someday. With the UT ink I get very smooth transitions through the
entire range. I'm refilling my carts right now but am not crazy
about it. I think it's kind of a pain to do. If I don't print every
day or so I might have some clogging which is cleared up with no more
than two or three cleanings. Like I said I love the ink and Paul's
curves but there're a lot of new things developing out there so I'm
leery about committing to CIS. Guess I'll keep refilling and trying
new inks and workflows until I can be sure I have the best. Which is
probably never.

I bet I've been no help at all but bottom line for me is the UT inks
and Paul's curves are the best yet.

I think it is the 13" printer of choice now for B&W.

I'll let others answer this. As with all "canned" profiles, there can be
differences between printers. The more curves that are available, the
better. Also, learning to tweak the curves for the paper you prefer and
your printer will improve things.

The only problem I had with my 1280 was apparently due to the residual dye
from the original color inkset on the pads causing nuisance clogs. The
Eboni (matte) black is apparently affected by dyes. Once I rinsed the pads,
the problem disappeared.

Hi There,
I have been using the dedicated BW 1280 for a while with the CIS UT and
Paul's curves.
Images are great - I got no complain at all. The only surprising thing
which has happened
to me, or to my printer was what I explain below:
I use only Photo Black - since I coat the print I didn't want the Ebony
which is prone to
clogging since it's interaction with the residual Epson inks on the
waste pads etc.
After about of two (2) weeks of my printer being unplugged I tried to
print and.... no black ink
whatsoever.
I removed the pipe from the black ink cartridge (CIS) and blew into the
pipe (with my mouth).
It produced about 1-1/2 inch long gelly-like plug in the pipe at the
cartridge end. Once I
washed it and VACUUM loaded the ink to the cartridge (the syringe sucked
from the cartridge
a lot air and ink which I reused) almost immediately I had a perfect
nozzle check again.
Strange thing since I haven't expect any clogging with the Photo Black
Ink. But probably
YOU HAVE TO PRINT A PURGE PRINT AT LEAST ONE A WEEK, even in the periods
of not printing.
Otherwise I got no complain WHATSOEVER about Pauls curves applied to UT
inks.
---
I am no longer waiting for any 8 color (or 64 color for that matter)
printer which can print
both color and BW.
Epson 1280 and UT and Paul's curves is the answer.
Here are my 2 cents.
Good luck
Jack

Thanks for the encouraging replies. I forgot to mention that since my
1160 broke down midstream (apparently a short in the heads, or
something like that) I have 4 full bottles of the UT quadtone set for
the 1160. If I get a 1280 will I be able to use all 4 of these inks
for refilling carts or just the toner and the eboni black?

I've recently seen some refurbished 1280s, with 1-yr warranty, going
for less than $300 on Ebay. As for Epson's online prices -- yes,
still high.
