I'm on a deadline...Epson 1280 doesn't print...help!

2003-11-26 by Joel Beeson

Hello:

I just set up a new (it's been in a box since early last year) Epson Photo 1280
to print an exhibit of my student's work. I never installed the OEM Epson color
cartridges, but instead, installed a set of MIS VM hextone cartridges that were
just delivered yesterday.

I installed the Epson driver on my Apple G4 (OS X 10.2.8) and followed the
directions for installing the MIS cartridges (two cleaning cycles). I cannot get it
to print an image out of PhotoShop, nor even the Epson head nozzle test
pattern.

It sends the data to the 1280, the machine goes through the motions of
printing, but no ink is laid on the paper. I cleaned the head three times and
then quit trying.

I'm on a deadline for the exhibit, so any advice and help would be most
welcome.

Thank you,

Joel Beeson

Joel,

Check and make sure you removed the tape covering the vent holes in the top
of the cartridges. If the vent holes are not open the ink can't flow out.

If they are properly vented put in the Epson cartridges and see what you
get. If those are not working then you have a problem with the printer.

pull the MIS carts out but be careful as they may have issues.
put in the epson carts and nozzle check and purge pattern print until
you get a clean nozzle check and a decent print.

re install the MIS carts and nozzle check and purge pattern.

if this doesn't work your carts are hosed.

Hi Martin:

Thanks for your speedy advice; I did pull off the tape before installing the
cartridges. In fact, I pushed a pin through the vent hole in the black cartridge
to make sure...there was a "grainy" sound as though the cartridge contained
lots of solids. I'll try the Epson color cartridges. One question;

How do I clean out the color ink when I do switch back to the hextone
cartridges?

Thanks,

Joel

AAAAARgh!

The printer acts the same with the Epson carts. Does this mean that I cannot
fix it w/o sending the printer back to Epson?

This may seem like an idiotic question to an answer, but are you sure
the nozzles are piercing through the plastic and rubber seals?

Joel,

The MIS-VM and Epson inks are compatible and the Epson carts make good
cleaning carts for this system.

Since you are not getting anything out of the Epson carts (and if the outlet
seals are getting properly broken as Eileen mentioned) then you may need to
deal with Epson customer support. If nothing is coming through on any
channel or nozzle it if probably an electronic problem.

If you are still within the one year warranty and if you call they will ship
you a refurbished printer and you send the defective one back in the box the
new one came in. I did this once and the new printer arrived within 24
hours. With the holiday you probably wouldn't get it until Monday or Tuesday
but nothing to lose by calling them now and starting the process.

These things always seem to happen when you have a deadline. When mine went
I wound up going to the nearest CompUSA and paying full list for another
one.

Keep up posted on how it turns out.

Martin

Hi All:

Yes, it appears the nozzles are piercing the rubber/plastic seals as there is
some ink leaking out...

I don't know if it is still on the warranty; trouble is I bought it and it has been
sitting in the box as we moved across country and then I started teaching, so
this is the first time I opened the box.

But I will try to convince Epson.

I will let you know what happens. I appreciate the helpful advice.

Best,

Joel

Re: I'm on a deadline...Epson 1280 doesn't print...help!

2003-11-28 by Joel Beeson

Ok, I got the printer working after doing what Epson Tech Support told me to
do...that is go through 10 nozzle cleaning cycles with the Epson color carts.

I have reinstalled the MIS VM carts and am using Somerset Photo Enhanced
Velvet. I tried printing a file out of PhotoShop (toned it, converted to grayscale,
applied Roark curve for neutral and converted back to RGB). The image looks
awful. After I applied the Roark curve, it lost a lot of shadow and highlight
detail and became very contrasty.

What am I doing wrong? The image looks better w/o the Roark curves, but
exhibits some posterization/metamerism-look on the Somerset.

Should I use the ICC profiles off the Legion paper site?

Thank you in advance for any help.

JB

1) The Roark Curve needs to be applied AFTER you convert back to RGB..

2) your color management in the printer driver needs to be disabled

3) If you're working with Photoshop 7, you also need to "Print with
preview" and set the "print Space" Profile to "same as source."

Keith;

Thank you for the help. Does it matter if I print a file as a tif or jpg? Also,
should I use the Legion-supplied ICC profiles for the printer?

Best,

Joel
