UT-2 inkset for wide format?

UT-2 inkset for wide format?

2004-01-12 by chipcarterdc

Paul: do you/MIS have any plans to port the UT-2 inkset and workflow
to wide-format printers? (I know you've said you're looking at doing
it for the 4000, but I'm wondering about wider format, like current
(or older) printers in the 44 inch range).

I ask because I'm considering getting a wide-format printer w. a
grayscale inkset, and don't want to spend a zillion dollars on an RIP
(e.g., the Septone system for the Epson 7600/9600 costs $2400 because
you have to buy their RIP to use the inks). Alternatively, if you
don't envision the UT-2 inkset going the wide format route, any input
on carbon-based wide format inksets that don't require the use of an
expensive RIP?

It's uncertain at this point. I may not bother with my 7500. Frankly, I'm
not sure the 7500 is up to the job of running the UT2 inkset, but it does
very well with UT1 & matte paper.

Well, the 7500/7000/9500/9000 all run UT fine. I use the 7000 driver even
with the 7500, and that is what my curves were written for. Some Mac users
report that they cannot get the 7000 driver to run the 7500. I'm not a Mac
person, so I don't know why the system won't allow this. On PC one can
manually set the printer & port.

But does the UT 1 inkset run fine on thesse printers without the use
of an RIP or complicated software tweaks? That's what I'm trying to
get away fromand what interests me about the very little I know about
the UT-2 inkset.

Perhaps a better question, for the benefit of those like me who have
no experience with either inkset, is: what exactly is easier about
using the UT-2 inkset v. the UT-1 inkset?

Photoshop image adjustment curves are used to control the inks. The basic
workflow is to edit in grayscale, save that file, then convert the image to
RGB, apply the tone curve you want, print and delete the RGB file.

I don't think the UT2 inkset is easier the way I use it. I continue to use
curves to control printing. However, it will print in the medium tones
without the use of curves. This opens up non-Photoshop applications, which
is important to some. My interest in the inkset has more to do with the
sepia end and its better glossy printing.

Paul,

As I am not looking for a sepia toner, is it possible
to use the blue toner in the Y and LC positions to
retain the ease of UT-2?

Thanks,
Don

If you have a large format 7000, 7500, 9000, or 9500 printer and are able to
use the 7500 or 9500 driver to drive it, then the UT1 inkset (no sepia
toner) is what I recommend. Converting a grayscale file to RGB and applying
a curve for printing is not difficult -- as long as the curves are already
written.

I don't think the UT2 inkset is going to be easier for you on these
printers. If you try to modify it, then things really get complex. Unless
you are very experienced, I'd stick with an inkset and workflow that have
been made for each other and well tested -- like the UT1 and 7500 (7000
driver) curves for the above printers.

RE: [Digital BW] UT-2 inkset for wide format?

Paul,

I'm using a 1280 for printing. I have used the R9
driver up to this point - but would prefer to use the
epson driver.

This morning I ordered a UT-2 cartridge to try it out.

Thanks,
Don

New 3200 dpi Scanner on the horizon...

2004-01-15 by D. Hill

I was just surfing around while considering to
purchase a Minolta Scan Dual III, when my suprised
eyes found the Scan Dual IV due in February.

It has 3200 optical resolution, and a USB 2.0
connection. I think I'll sell the epson flatbed and
buy one of these...

The specs look fantastic - and I was impressed with
the quality of the Scan Dual II
