Epson 2200 Driver Question re. Paper

Epson 2200 Driver Question re. Paper

2004-01-15 by zloi1

About 10 months ago, I went to the Epson website and downloaded a
driver update file for my 2200. I didn't notice it immediately, but
the new driver has eliminated all but 4 of the paper choices:
Watercolor ("radiant white"), Enhandced matte, Plain, and Velvet.
What happened to all the other types, like film transparency,
backlght, luster, etc--why, there's not even good old glossy there!
Meanwhile, the profiles have been expanded to cover paper types no
long even listed among the choices. What is this all about? What
paper setting should one use, for example, to print to a transparency
surface or to glossy paper?

I believe your list of paper choices is because you have the matt cartridge
in. If you put in the PK cartridge the glossy paper options will/should
appear. I can not speak for transparency...

Are you using the Photo Black or the Matte Black ink? The driver should
only present you with the papers that are compatible with the ink you are
using. If you are using the Photo Black and are only seeing matte papers,
then there is a bug somewhere.

Which black cartridge do you have loaded? the newer
drivers limit paper choice based on what black is in
the printer.

Epson 2200 Driver with Matte or Photo Black--so how about Eboni?

To the several comments in this vein, are you guys all saying that
when you have matte black in your printer, you get one list of papers,
and when you have photo black, it's another? Are you SURE? I just
replaced the matte cartridge with an Epson-made photo one, and---no
difference in paper choices (still the same 4). I don't recall such a
difference on the original driver, either, just a larger paper
selection. One possibillity (though unlikely): I DO have a couple
non-Epson cartridges installed (not the blacks). Which leads me to
wonder, I was about to order the MIS Eboni black cart to try it
out--so how would Epson's software handle THAT cart? Anyone with any
personal experience?

Thanks, -Tom

This likely because the change of cartridge is not being recognized I bet
you cant see the PK colour profiles either. This is a problem many
experience with OSX driver. Delete and re-add the printer in Printer Setup.

This happens in Windows, too. You have to wave a dead chicken over it to get
it to recongnize the change. Or maybe go into the diagnostics in the Status
Monitor--I think that did it.

Precisely!

I can usually get it to change by clicking on the 2200 print monitor icon in
the Windows tool bar so it comes up and tells me the ink levels. Either that
and/or in the printer dialogue going to Maintenance>Printer & Option Info
and clicking on the ink. Usually does it. But the other day it just wouldn't
switch. I shut down and restarted - nothing.

(sometimes refreshing the USB drivers/printer port does it too....)

In the end I had to shut down, physically unplug the printer for 30 sec.
Power up the printer and then reboot. - Finally, that did it.

There seems to be no real rhyme or reason to how easy or hard the printer is
going to make changing the black ink...

As if it's an Epson Matte Black cart.

Hi everyone,
It appears we all have a similar problem with the Epson driver 5.4. Why
not switch back to Version 5.31? It works perfectly well. My opinion is that
it offers better colour prints than 5.4 and it certainly produces better B&W
prints per the Carl Schofield method from the Luminous Landscape website
using Photorealistic mode. Just a thought due to personal experience.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I will work the problem forthwith.
But there must be folks who have tried the MIS Eboni cartridge in
lieu of the Photo or Matter black. How does the ink compare upon
printing and how does the software react? Does it still give you a
report on ink levels?

Lastly, a big gripe against Epson. Why is their support and
documentation dept so lame? Not only in regards to this problem
(whihc it wouldn't hurt them to explain in their documentation), but
I've never been too impressed by them, having owned a 1280 and dig
camera, too. It's like a car dealer selling a new car with the
attitude, once it's paid for and off the lot, any problems are purely
the owner's responsibility.

There are a few of us around.

>How does the ink compare upon printing

Eboni is less warm than Matte Black, with similar Dmax. It seems to
work well with the UC inks for color printing.

>and how does the software react?

When you make the first print with Eboni it pops up a window saying
this isn't epson ink, are you sure you want to continue using it. You
say yes and it makes the print and never asks you again (until the
next time you replace a cart).

>Does it still give you a report on ink levels?

Yes.

I use a 2200 with Eboni for Black Only printing. See my articles on
it for details (link below) if you're interested in that.

As I said in my last post, it works identically to the Matte Black cart,
in every way. At least in my 2200 with WIn XP.

I should clarify, that I meant "in every way" software-wise. The ink
is as Clayton describes.
