QuadToneRip and Se

2004-08-10 by johnglodge

In EEM when I use the four curves warm, cool, Sepia and coolSE I
find no difference between cool and coolSE.
Sepia is a stronger warm than warm and cool is essentially
black&white with no color caste.

That is coolSE appears not to be correct yes the filesize is 2 bytes
shorter but it prints the same???

Anyone else see this.

What I was aiming to do was see the four extremes.

The difference between the Cool and CoolSe profiles is quite subtle and
as you can see from a look inside each of the profiles the only
difference is the relative amounts of light cyan and light magenta inks
that are used. The Warm profile uses only the black and light black
inks whereas the Sepia profile adds light magenta, yellow, and a little
light cyan. You could of course change the ink limits to produce
stronger toning if desired.

Carl

That's very nice. Thank for the info.

Do you believe there is any risk of a user changing the profiles and
bringing back metamerism?

For example, I do not feel confortable doing it. I believe I might do
something wrong and make a mistake with the yellow ink.

What do you think?

Again, thank you.

Re: [Digital BW] QuadToneRip and Se

2004-08-11 by johnglodge

Carl, this is true in the Mac implementation but in the recent
Windows XP case the profiles are binary (well sort of) files that
are not obviously amenable to editing.

Yes I agree looking at the txt Mac profiles that the differences are
quite subtle.

This then means that there is not a definite Selenium profile in
either (MAc or PC) case so that two profile merging as is the case
with Sepia or Warm(which is more or less a diluted Sepia) is not
available for Selenium tones.

The way I see it there are currently two very subtlely different
base positions (Cool or CoolSe) and two points in the same direction
Warm followed by Sepia. So that a very good range of excellent
control from Sepia to neutral B&W can be obtained but with very
little control in the Selenium direction.

What would be needed to round this would be a "cold"_Selenium
followed by a Selenium. I am sure that there is quite a bit of work
to get it to the level of quality there there is so far so perhaps
it is somewhere in the future.

Shouldn't be any problem if you want to make a custom sepia profile.
The light black ink is quite warm/yellow to begin with so it is not
necessary to add much additional yellow ink.

John,

Yes, it should be possible to make a stronger "Cold selenium" profile
and a mild "neutral-selenium" profile and then blend the two to get the
desired level of selenium toning. Alternatively, you could also
develop a single custom profile with the precise tone you are looking
for. The latter approach might also give better control over the
distribution of toning from highlights to shadows with a custom toning
curve.

Carl

I'm a new user of QTR, still testing the Windows version.

I'd like to know if it is mandatory to always use two profiles with the
application.

What happens if we use just one? Can we set up the same profile twice?
Profile 1 and 2 with the same name? What happens in this case?

Nelson,

I've only used the Mac version of QTR, so I'm not familiar with how
profiles are controlled in the PC version. It should be possible to
use a single profile at 100%.
