Windows Loopback adaptor revisited - problem

Windows Loopback adaptor revisited - problem

2004-08-22 by njfranknj

Ever since I installed the Loopback Adaptor I have had very long
startup times for Win2K, on the order of 5 minutes. First, I see a
note that \\fk\quad2200\ is being reinstalled and that holds for about
as long as a normal full startup, then the screen goes to my
background color with the hour glass for a long time (minutes) before
loading my desktop. This is more than a minor hassle as I am now
switching back and forth between my old Win2K and XP.

Is this necessary? Is there a way around it?

We can take this off-list, if it is inappropriate for this one.

you might want to look at the following

http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/winprint.html#usbprint

Or at the Microsoft Developer Net www.msdn.com for more information.

Really the loopback adapter is a systems developer feature to enable
software testing with a network; without an actual network present.

Well, that wasn't it. I went through the directions for setting the
lpt port up with the Loopback Adaptor again and used lpt2 instead of
lpt3, which I had used before, then I deleted lpt3. I have another
printer on lpt1.

It makes absolutely no difference to the now very long startup times
I'm experiencing with Win2K. Win2K used to take about a minute to
boot, now it takes about 5 and it seems like all of that time is due
to some network setup operations - the message before the major delay
is about setting up the network connections to \\fk\quad2200\, the
location of the QTR sharing setting that the Loopback Adaptor uses.

the loopback adapter needs an IP address.
email me offline and I will send you explicit instructions.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
