Printing with Epson 2200 on Kodak Pro Lustre paper

Printing with Epson 2200 on Kodak Pro Lustre paper

2004-10-07 by colin_young@yahoo.com

I'm trying to produce a b&W print on Kodak Professional inkjet paper
(lustre finish). I've downloaded and installed the Kodak supplied ICC
profiles for my printer, and the image was converted to b&w using the
channel mixer method. I'm using the stock Ultrachrome inks (although
I just realised I didn't check if I've got photo black or matte ink
installed right now).

When I print to Epson Enhanced Matte paper (with the Epson profile),
I get a reasonably neutral-toned image. When I use the Kodak paper
(with the Kodak profile) I get a very warm image, tending to the pink
end of things.

Does anyone have any experience with this setup and can offer some
tips?

Thanks

Colin

I find that a 30 warm:70 cool blend of the EEM profiles that I use with
the 4000 and UC inks gives pretty much dead neutral up through the
midtones and than a slight warming in the deep shadows. The warming in
the shadows occurs because only the LK is being neutralized with LC and
LM inks and the un-neutralized K predominates in the shadows.
Here is a plot of the cmy and visual densities for a 30 warm:70 cool
blend print for a 21 step wedge that illustrate what I've described
above:

I use the Mac version of QTR where you set the profile blend
proportions with a drop down menu in the driver print dialog of QTR. I
think that with the PC version you either do this in the scripts or in
the gui there may be a setting for blending profiles.

Since you're not sure what black ink you used, it sounds like you weren't
too careful about your driver settings. For a profile to work, you
absolutely have to have the driver set exactly the way it was when the
profile was built, which should be documented in the instructions that came
with it. This naturally includes having the right black ink installed, but
also includes having the right Epson paper selected in the pull-down box.

Re: [Digital BW] Printing with Epson 2200 on Kodak Pro Lustre paper

2004-10-07 by colin_young@yahoo.com

I can understand why one might think that, and it's a perfectly
reasonable assumption to make. In this case I was very careful about
following the instructions, although I'll check it again.

The reason I'm not sure about the ink is that the last print I did
was on EEM, and I'm pretty sure I had the matte ink in, although it
was a throw-away print so I wasn't concerned about the colour balance
or d-max, so it is possible I left the photo black in. The problem
print didn't warn me that the wrong ink was loaded so it's likely I
had the right ink (it doesn't help that for various reasons my
printer is down a flight of stairs in another room).

The interesting thing is I had exactly the same problem with Ilford
lustre finish paper. I haven't tried the Epson lustre finish, but
I've never had a problem with either glossy or matte (and that
includes experimenting with non-inkjet watercolour paper and rice
paper). So far I've been consistently (okay, 2 times) having problems
with the lustre/semi-gloss papers.

I'll take your suggestion to carefully check the settings and look
into the other suggestion (I wasn't aware that QTR was available for
Windows now).

Thanks

Colin

I use Qimage and print to file, you can even let QTRgui monitor the
destination filder of Qimage and printing will start automatically.

I've got that set up also (I've actaully got QTR and QTRGui installed
on a different remote computer and that part is working pretty
smoothly).

A detailed account of my difficulties is here:

There's one response as of now that looks like it might help, but if
you've got any tips they'd be most appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: [Digital BW] (Solved) Printing with Epson 2200 on Kodak Pro Lustre paper

2004-10-08 by Al Forist

Greetings,

I had similar problems, though with different paper sizes. After
trying to think it through, I came to the conclusion that I should
try printing (TO FILE) the same size as the image, not the paper
size.

In my case I was trying to print, through Qimage and QTR RIP, 2
5x7's on letter size paper. When I printed a "letter size" page from
Qimage to a file and then printed that through the QTR Rip, I was
getting part of the image on each of two pages.

After changing the output size to 7x10 (the actual size of my image)
all went well.

I hope this goes to your question.

Regards,
Al

Thanks for the info. I'll keep it in mind along with the other info I
got from the DPReview group, and other responses in this thread.

I'll post a new thread with my hopefully successful results.
