Hello,

I just purchased a Canon i9900 8 dye ink tank printer. It produces
beautiful color prints. I was wondering if anyone is using this printer for
black and white? If so, are there black and white archival inks available
for it?

Thank you for response.

Canon i9900

Yes, I know. This board is mostly about Epson, and the i9900 prints
lousy BW. But I bought it, and I'm committed to it.

So, does anyone out there know of any ongoing testing of products
(RIPS, Inks, papers, etc), or products already on the market, to
improve it's capacity to print BW?

I am so dang frustrated trying to get a really good BW from the 9900.

Thanks

Skip

In the last year, Jon Cone at Inkjet Mall had written about the new
Piezo inks working well with existing printer drivers, and I know they
were testing
the Canon printers. Their inks are carbon pigment and at least my
experience with them since the late '90s has been very positive. You
might
want to contact them and see how it all worked out - I personally,
haven't used any of the Canon printers. They also have a yahoo user
group:

You might find info in their archives. Hope this helps.

Hi Clayton, though Jon initially intended to bring out Piezotones for
the Canon, it never happened. They took it a ways, I even saw test
prints, but I think there were some problems that would make a viable
supportable product impossible. I may have even heard the heads heat
up the ink to some extraordinaly degree. Suffice it to say that they
work very differently from Epson printers.
Skip, I have profiled the i9900 for a few friends. The results have
been suprisingly good for B&W, much better than (older) Epsons in RGB
mode. I would suggest selecting a paper or two and having some good
custom profiles made. For use with color inks, that's about as good as
it gets. It's a good printer, and perhaps Canon will come out with
some better B&W solutions in the future. Alternatives would be good
for us all.
