What is Glop?

What is Glop?

2005-01-12 by donbga

I'm sure I've not been watching the ball very closely so I'm curious
about the discussions about glop. I'vs gathered from some of the
latest threads that it is a fixative or coating medium used to coat
and remove or reduce bronzing with glossy surface papers.

Where is it sold? I assume it is applied via a special cart but how
does one do that through software/work flow/printer driver? Does it
require a septone printer and how does it affect the print head?

Thanks for your indulgence,

Don Bryant

"Glop" = Gloss Optimizer. MIS sells a version of it. It is experimental at
this point. What we are most interested in is integrating it into the
inkset like with the R800 in order to eliminate gloss differentials and
bronzing. I can't say how well it'll work at this point, but there have
been some promising experiments.

Paul,

The point about the HighGloss Ultrachromes of the R800 is that the inks are
HighGloss (on the right paper eg Premium Glossy) without the Gloss
Optimizer. They don't suffer from bronzing like the normal Ultrachromes of
the 2200/4000 etc. The Gloss Optimizer in the R800 only fills in the white
and near-white areas of the print which are less glossy than the HighGloss
Ultrachrome printed areas. The Gloss Optimiser in the R800 DOES NOT make the
Ultrachrome inks glossy by being sprayed over the whole print, as many seem
to think. The little Epson Picturemate has the same HighGloss Ultrachrome
inks but no Gloss Optimizer. You can see white areas are less glossy than
the inked areas with that printer. You can also turn off the Gloss Optimizer
in the R800 and the prints are still glossy (they just have less glossy
white areas like the Picturemate).

Spraying GO over entire prints printed with normal Ultrachromes or other
inks may improve them, but it is not what the R800 does.

Bob,

The MIS glop and R800 clones -- all the UT family or colors, in fact -- can
not match the R800 coated pigments in the high gloss department. So, that
is not the goal. Frankly, I'm not a fan of high gloss, at least for B&W,
though I understand the snap it can give an image.

So, for the inks I work with, the goal is to deal with bronzing and
differential gloss. At this point HighGloss is not within the UT, uncoated
pigs' capabilities without sprays (or maybe even with sprays).
