ImagePrint & 2200 For Black & White

ImagePrint & 2200 For Black & White

2005-01-14 by edmundaleks

I'm new to this forum and if I'm asking this in the wrong place I
beg to be excused.

I've been getting more and more into B&W digital photography since I
started this hobby. I have Photoshop, and I was able to find a great
deal on a used Epson 2200. I later bought Imageprint 5.6 for XP
(upgraded to 6.0 without serious problems) because of problems I had
when printing B&W. The change was greatly beneficial, but is this a
setup that you experts would use? I guess my question is: Starting
with the Epson 2200, what would be my best software/ink/paper
combination if I used my 2200 as a dedicated B&W printer? Cost is a
definite factor because I don't do this for a living.

Thanks,

Since you have the 2200, why don't you give BO printing a try?

You could just go with MIS Eboni or PK and do BO printing.

They look great on my C86, except for the banding.

But I believe Paul and others here use the 2200 to do BO and that
printer doesn't "band" like the C86.

Give it a try with the Epson black ink you already have.

Scott

Hmm. Given that the OP stated he has purchased and is using ImagePrint
software why would he want to follow your advice to "give BO printing
a try"? For a dedicated BW printer, IP would not be my first choice
from the perspective of cost-effectiveness(given the availability of
good, low-cost alternatives like QTRIP and BO), but it is certainly is
capable of excellent B&W (as well as color) output. As to the details
of best paper, etc--I'll assume that the IPers will comment on that.

Gee Phil, maybe the same reason you're recommending him to use QTR or
something else when he already has IP?

Hi Ed,

It really all comes down to what level of printing you want to reach, how
much effort you're willing to put in, how much you want to spend, etc.

IP, is a workable "out of the box" solution; albeit expensive. QTR is a
great alternative if you're willing to expend some effort to get good
prints. If you really want complete control through creating your own
profiles, then IJC/OPM is your choice. Of course, there is always BO
printing using MIS Eboni black...can't beat the price on this one!

Basically, you'll have to experiment with different tools and techniques to
find out what works for you. IMO, no one can really tell you what to use nor
should they. Great to see new members on the forum and welcome to the world
of digital B&W print making.

Ed

I have two Epson printers: 1280 & 2200. The 1280 was set up as a
dedicated B&W machine and I used the 2200 for color only. But
recently the 1280 developed a clog which I can't seem to bust. So I
purchased ImapgePrint for the 2200. It gives me great B&W prints with
no metarism. I don't think I'll be going back to the dedicated system
for some time. Good luck.

Well, thanks for all the good advice. It was helpful and somewhat
reassuring. It looks like I could have started out in a lot worst
shape than I have. I've also had time to read a hundred or so posts
on various topics since I asked my question. For sure there is a lot
to learn here.

I have an Epson 2200 and Imageprint. I've just started experimenting
with BO and I have to say that BO can be often better than IP. I feel
like the prints look more "photographic", closer to the wet darkroom.
Now, if you look close you're going to see some dots especially in the
highlights, but it seems to me that the overall look of the print
is more important.

Scott, you've evaded the question by putting words in my mouth! I
never recommended that he "use QTR or something else". What I said was
that IP would not have been _my_ first choice from the perspective of
cost-effectiveness (read it again, if you still don't get it). Then I
said that IP "is certainly capable of excellent B&W". I suggested no
alternative for him to try--especially since the cost of acquiring the
(IP) software was not an issue.

So again, I ask: what's the justification for recommending BO printing
to someone who is printing with ImagePrint?

So now I have to justify my recommending BO printing to someone?

You're really something, Phil.

Whatever...

Scott, of course you don't _have to_ justify anything. To anyone.
Ever.

However, why wouldn't a conscientious poster want to offer an
explanation (OK, "justify") about why he apparently believes an
IP-user could benefit from doing BO printing *as* *an* *alternative*
*to* *IP* [please note the emphasis]. Was it unreasonable for me to
conclude that you felt that the BO method might be superior to IP
(keeping in mind that the OP was _not_ complaining about the quality
he was getting from IP)? So, I simply was interested in hearing about
the comparisons you might have done or seen (or even just
word-of-mouth). Instead, you make peevish, non-informative replies. I
wonder why?

Phil
