i use Premium Luster as well as Premium Semi-Gloss.
i prefer EPSG myself, but to be honest, they are so close, i can
only tell the difference when they are actually in my hand.
Luster is cheaper, so i do my proofing on it, and the final print on
Semi-gloss.

i feel that i get a "little" better Dmax on Semi-Gloss, and also
feel it is a "little" sharper (under a loupe), maybe it's just that
it's smoother, BUT i am spitting hairs. hanging on the wall, not many
would see a difference.

other my disagree with my observations, but don't i think you'd see
a big difference in the two.

those two are the only papers i use though, and i've tried A LOT of
papers.

 hope that helps

For non-matte I'm now using Ilford Gallerie Smooth Pearl in the 2200
for both color and b&w. In both cases, I'm using the MIS Photo Black &
light black with the Ultrachrome inks for the remainder. For QTR
profiles on this paper, I'm working right now with the
UCPK-MCeramic-Luster profiles & have been satisfied with the results.

Hi Roy,

That is an interesting ink configuration. How do the MIS inks in just
the two K positions work with the rest of the UC inks and QTR? Do the
prints look less "warm"? (I guess I'm wondering what prompted you to
go with this configuration.)

Thanks!
Eric

Well, to tell you the truth, I started using the MIS inks in the 2200
cartridges because shortly after I bought a set of 4 ounce UT-2 refills
for my 1280, the print head died. And I didn't want to let $80 worth of
ink go to waste.

I'm blending the QTR cool & warm profiles at 90-10 and find the color
approximates that produced by the 1280 on Smooth Pearl with the QTR
neutral profile. When I get some time, I do plan on experimenting a
bit to see if I can produce something cooler. But that's a project for
another day.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I was also happy to find that the
Wilhelm Imaging numbers for this paper meet the "after I'm dead"
criteria. Traceable archival testing is a must for any paper I use. As
I didn't hear about any other papers I will go for the Epson brand
(always wary of original mfg brands, I don't know why).

Roy I have been pleased with the Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl but the
finish is too textured for my work at hand. Thanks for the pointer on
the QTR profiles though, I will try those next time I print on Ilford.
BTW that paper got rather poor fade results from an independant test I
found online (can't recall the link, it wasn't Wilhelm).

Interesting given Epson in its Professional Media Sample Guide lists Premium
Luster Photo Paper under "Photographic Papers" and Photo Semi Gloss under
"Coated Papers (Gloss & Semigloss)". Premium Luster is not, to my
knowledge, available in Europe yet (I have not been able to find it in the
UK) and I would suggest a newer paper. It has a beautiful silky soft finish
(with glop curves).

Hi Roy,

Quick question for you.
I have been trying to print high end B&W using QTR and the epson inks, any suggestions as to what combinations on the sliders that is, blend, shadows, etc.
Also, is there any way to preview the print without having to actually print it and spend so much paper and ink?
Thanks
Moises

The only way to do it properly is to make a set of curves specifically for
that paper. At a minimum, use the EPSG curves and relinearize them if you
can. If you are able to I would suggest using a soft proof also. The issue
you will have with any RC paper is "bronzing". I spent a lot of time on RC
papers (with full access to the curve creation process) and gave them up
because of bronzing - until "glop" came along. Glop has been very effective
in removing bronzing from Luster but I now use a different ink set from you.
I use QTR to drive the glop application. Unfortunately, the move to RC
paper requires a decent jump in effort unless you are able to piggy-back the
work of others. I suspect that you have stuck with the Epson inks because
you like to do colour also. I think most people experimenting with glop are
using dedicated B&W ink sets.

Cheers

Moises:

There is information on print previewing or soft proofing in QTR at
http://harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html#softproof.

What I do when I'm in an experimental mood is print small images at
different settings in different positions on the same piece of paper
(labelling them, of course) so I can see not only how the individual
picture looks but also how it looks in comparison with others.

Re: [Digital BW] Epson Lustre

2005-01-28 by Moises Faidengold

Steve,
Thanks for the info.
A couple of things, I'm new to QTR and still on the learning curve, therefore some terms like Glup don't mean anyhing yet.
Also, I wish a could soft proof the prints before I spend inks and paper, any suggestions in terms of the blending and the other sliders they have?
And finally, yes, I do use the Epson inks because of the colors. ...
Thanks,

I think most people experimenting with glop are
using dedicated B&W ink sets.

Cheers

Steve

Moises

Glop is not a QTR term. It is short form for gloss optimizer. Epson
introduced glop with the R800 printer. MIS has made their own version, by
their own admission not as good as Epson's but good enough to remove a lot
of bronzing from many papers. It can be loaded into their new refillable
cartridges (thoroughly recommended). The issue is how do you apply it.
Obviously a 21/2200 can not be used with the Epson driver as the driver
doesn't expect glop to be loaded. I and others use QTR because you can
define how each ink jet operates. Others use RGB curves or IJC/OPM.

I think you have been pointed to Carl's soft proofs. Also Roy's new work is
a big leap forward. (I have not had the chance to go through it yet.) I
would also think hard about how you source your inks. Until recently my
2100 was set up with colour inks and a CFS. I used (and still use for
colour) MIS' ultrachrome equivalents (take a look through their website).
It is much cheaper to buy 4oz bottles (I live in the UK and a 4oz bottle of
MIS ink costs the same as one cartridge in London!!), a set of their
refillable cartridges and a few syringes etc and load your own ink. You
also then have the advantage of expanding your horizons and loading whatever
inks you want (eg UT7 with glop in the LK position) into the cartridges and
using a programme like QTR to drive them. Swapping back and forth is not a
major hassle.

Roy,
Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately the link is for Mac only, nothing for PC!!!!
