PK or MK on QUAD 2200?

PK or MK on QUAD 2200?

2005-02-17 by krn_ptr

I've just sent my payment for this amazing piece of software. Roy's efforts
are truly a service to the black and white digital printing community. IMO,
he's turned my expensive piece of junk, into a capable black and white
printer. Without the help of this group, I wouldn't have known about QTR or
have been able to get up and running so quickly. Thank-you all.

Now to my question. Has anyone tried using the supplied 2200 profiles for
matte paper with Photo Black ink, or, Matte Black ink on glossy/semi papers?
I'm finding it a real hassle (not to mention a waste of ink) having to change
back and forth from MK to PK. Each time, I have to go through the Epson
"dance of a dozen steps" to trash/reinstall printers etc. (It occurs to me now,
that there might be a way to do this in Applescript -- not that I have the
faintest idea how!)

TIA,

peter

Well you don't need to trash/reinstall printers. Add the printers with the
MK cartridge in and then rename them to denote MK. Put in the PK cartridge
and add the printer(s) again, this time changing the name(s) to denote PK.
Then select the printer depending on what cartridge is installed.

MK will rub off RC paper and give a very low dMax.

My goodness, Steve, that's far too simple for me to have thought of :-) I knew
someone in this group would have an answer. Thanks a lot.

QTR is surely the best thing I've done this year.

Yea, if you think it is a hassle on a 2200 try a 9600! I was wondering the same thing. Is it
possible to use the matte black ink on Premium Luster media somehow with QTR to limit
the black density, or is the pigment composition of UC MK just no way compatable with rc
media? If I could do this it would make my life so much easier. Eventually I'm going to use
the 10K printer loaded with Lyson Cave Paint for all glossy and rc media but that is a
thousand bucks away for the moment.

Well, Steve. I said it was too simple for someone like me... I can't figure out
how to do what you advised.

I'm on a Mac and the Epson manual says you have to trash your 2200 printer
list. I tried NOT trashing it, and it didn't work. I can change the name of the
first printer, but how do you instal the second printer and get profiles into the
driver?

When I select the printer in the Advanced settings as a QuadToneRip 2200, it's
listed in the printer list, but when I select it in the driver in CS, there are no
profiles with it even though I ran the 2200 profile instal.

Re: [Digital BW] PK or MK on QUAD 2200?

2005-02-18 by Steve Kale

Ok so go to Printer Setup Utility and delete all the Epson printers. Insert
MK cartridge and turn on printer (I use USB so that I can use QTR as well).
Add the Epson USB 2200 printer (or printers if you want all the driver
options). Rename them to denote MK (command i). Now put in the PK
cartridge. Add the printers again - they will have their generic names
again. Select each and command i to change their names. That does the Epson
drivers.

QTR doesn't know nor care whether PK or MK is installed. So your QTR issue
is independent of switching cartridges. Check your CurveDropBox and see if
it contains the .quad files. Sounds like your profile install didn't work.
My install of QTR was done some time ago and I am not really familiar with
Roy's new easy install procedures.

Re: [Digital BW] PK or MK on QUAD 2200?

Yeah, thanks for your reply again, Steve. Unfortunately, the suggested method
doesn't really seem to apply to the new easy install procedure in v2.1d. There
is no CurveDropBox anymore that I can find.

The install automatically sets up a printer which I have now named,
QUAD2200MK. You load the curves into that first printer the same way as in
v2.0, using the terminal launched by the curves installer file. However, there
doesn't seem to be any way to get the curves into the second Quad printer
selected in the Printer Setup Utility.

The good news is that the Epson 2200 Firewire printer I selected in the Printer
Setup Utility to print colour, does work without having to trash/reinstall the
printers etc. So your idea would work if I only knew how to install a second
QUAD2200PK printer and get the curves loaded.

Re: [Digital BW] PK or MK on QUAD 2200?

2005-02-18 by Steve Kale

Ok I think you or I are getting confused. The only issue re swapping ink
cartridges arises with the Epson driver - not QTR. If you use a Mac and the
Epson driver the procedure I described will avoid you having to delete
printer etc when swapping PK to MK and vice versa. With QTR, it does NOT
care if you swap. So you only need QUAD2200 once (as opposed to the Epson
driver where you should have two of all that you use - No Margins, Maximum,
Standard etc). QUAD2200 can sit happily alongside your twin sets of Epson
drivers - just define the Epson ones first.

Hi Steve,

You're right about the confusion, but it's not you, it's definitely me that's
confused. I completely misunderstood the problem, and your explanation. I
think I'm beginning to get it.

I thought I needed two iterations of the QUAD printer, but duh, the curves take
care of the PK/MK issue in the QUAD driver; it's the Epson driver that's the
problem.

I'll try the double install of the two inks and the Epson drivers later when I get
home, and let you know how it worked.

Thanks for your patience.
