Scanner opinions

2005-02-23 by ben_zlotkin

Hello,

I am just switching - or considering a switch to digital printing. I shoot medium format
B+W exclusively. After having a few scans done on an Imacon, I think I'll continue to scan
my portfolio of negs. I seem to need no more than 3500-4000 DPI for my 6x7s.

My question is what scanner to buy - Imacons are not an option (Im a graduate student).
I've looked at the Nikon 9000 - but have heard only bad things about its neg holders. The
Minolta Dimage Multi Pro looks great, but is hard to find.

I would love to know which flatbeds with tras units you like and also am interested in
hearing about the new(er) Microtek 120tf.

Thanks for your time,

Ben Zlotkin MFA SFAI

I believe most of what I've heard people say about their 8000/9000 MF holders. BUT... I've had very little trouble with mine. Considering what you get for your buck, a used 8000 is a great deal.

RE: [Digital BW] Scanner opinions

HI Ben

I get really good results scanning 6x7 negs using the Nikon 9000, Silverfast
AI and B+W (Agfa Scala, and HP5). I have the glass transparency holder, and
it seems to work fine. It's fiddly if you need to use the precut mounts to
avoid Newton's rings, but I don't get a lot of problems with those. (not
sure, but I don't think you get interference patterns with Scala)

If you are bulk scanning your negative archive it's going to be a bit slow
at only 2 (6x7) negs per scan

The Microtek 120tf is a great film scanner, I use silverfast software with
it, and the optional glass mount for edge to edge sharpness. I prefer to
scan RAW and then process thru silverfasts HDR in positive, avoiding the
'film neg correction' interpretation. The price is now a lot less than I
paid, worth every penny, and came with the silverfast software and HDR, full
version. I had some 35mm files scanned by it and printed 24 x 36 thru studio
print using piezo inks.. One 'master scanner' who scans for hire, using a
drum scanner solely, thought it was from a drum scanned neg.

I had no luck with Vuescan with this scanner, could have been my Mac OS,
which with Vuescan is always klunky and tiresome, many spinning wheels.
Experienced very strange behaviours within the scan quality as well.

Just very happy with the Microtek and silverfast workflow. I personally will
not use another Nikon film scanner... A opinion based on past experience
with an LS2000. (old I know, and probably not relevant :)).

I had the LS2000 several years ago, and I agree it was v. poor. However the
LS9000 is a different beast quality-wise, and it scans MF

Glad it's different, and that you are having success. Bottom line that
counts right? :) A friend tried the LS8000 prior to 9000's release, and was
not happy with it, I decided on the microtek120tf when I couldn't find the
polaroid any longer, same machine, and I wanted the more diffused light
source vs the Nikon. Was recommended by other friends very happy with the
polaroid 120 whose prints I had seen.

The other issue that I had with Nikon was support (in Canada) when my LS2000
went wonky.. The Microtek support has been great.

The microtek 120tf now lists approx 2300 CDN, the LS9000 approx 3200 CDN...
The other consideration is the glass film holder cost difference... Anyway,
just thoughts for the fellow who asked about the microtek120tf.
