More C86 woes - New printer

More C86 woes - New printer

2005-02-27 by Scott McLoughlin

I bought a new C86 after no luck with getting a C84 going again
after some lack of use. (BTW, put the Epson C86 package inks
into the C84, did a head cleaning and now the old C84 prints color
like a charm.)

I put the MIS inks into the C86 upon install. Epson driver complained
about black (big "X" symbol in the driver), so I just replaced it with a
new cartridge (MIS Eboni matte).

Printed the Epson installer test image. Epson driver test print pattern
showed severe banding in cyan. I ran a nozzle check and all came out
well, except for cyan. So I just replaced cyan with a new cyan cartridge.
No cleaning cycles or anything. (Tired of futzing).

Repeated nozzle check. CMY do look ok. But now BLACK is very
screwed up. Letters smudged and barely legible, lines all broken up.
How can this be?

I'm a software engineer, but futzing with printers and inks is so
completely
opaque. I can't see any deterministic diagnosis/prognosis course of action.

What should I do? I'm sort of loathe to embark on more cleaning cycles.
Last time it did no good and just ate up carts of ink.

Isn't this supposed to be EZ? Thanks all.

Scott

The C84 setup onced worked well for me

Epson had me do NINE cleanings in a row one time. I got pretty livid. She
kept saying, "bear with me" but I was paying for the ink.

Anyway, it worked.

One thing I always do when I have to clean is go through the alignment setup
also. This can cause banding also.

The purging patterns on the MIS web site are helpful,
they have one for 4 color printers (which would be suitable
for C84/86) and 6/7 color for more sofisticated units.
There is a pattern/sequence in the cleaning cycles
, short burst for the first, then long for the middle one
and another short burst for the third- this then repeats
itself, however it will not help or even make the clog worse
to keep cleaning ad nauseam. The neanderthal providing
tech support should not have advised you to keep using the
cleaning cycles. If you have downloaded the purging pattern from
MIS (which you should use at least once a week, in order
to avoid any major clogs) the best procedure if you have a rebel
clog is to do a nozzle check, then cleaning, another nozzle check,
second cleaning, nozzle check, third cleaning, nozzle check then
print the MIS purge pattern and repeat procedure if you still see
streaking in what should be solid blocks of black and grey.
If this does not work, MIS details a few procedures involving
Windex (see their troubleshooting guide).
Endless cleaning cycles will flood the dumping
sponge and create a big mess without solving the
initial problem.

> I'm a software engineer,

A-ha!!!!!!!!!!! So THAT'S why you don't read the instructions :-)

MIS explains clearly that you should make sure the printer works before
you install the MIS inks.

I let my daughter empty the cartridges that came along with the printer to
make sure it worked.

It could be that the printer never worked well right out of the box.
You'll never know :-(
