Don't know if the cartridges you are using have a sponge,
but if they do, there is a limit to the number of times you
can refill a cartridge- "foam" starts building up to the point
where even trying to prime the cart by drawing 1cc with a
syringe won't clear the air bubbles inside.
I had been using a set for Canon and had to chuck them
after about 5-6 times.

That sounds a little worrying. Just bought two sets myself. Firts set
has only had one refill so far and all is working fine. If I have a
problem I'll let you know. Checked the MIS site this morning and they
are still selling the carts. Looks like they have reduced the price.

  Hope you solve your problem.

  Peter.

PS Have you asked MIS if this is a known issue?

[Digital BW] Re: Refillable cartridges problem (from MIS)

My carts do have spongy (white in color) material on the side that
feeds ink to the print heads. Maybe I'm going to find myself
approaching the 5-6X useful life that you've experienced. I've
probably refilled about 3 or 4 times so far. Certainly affects the
economy of using this system.

Does anyone sell carts without sponges? Are sponges necessary?
Anyone know about this issue?

Thanks.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth

This effect of ink residue in the sponge has always been an issue with
the olders type of carts such as in the 1160, which contain all sponge,
no reservoir. With this type of cart, you had to remove the foam
residue after the carts had been refilled a few times. I got the
impression that the carts you are using did not have this problem.
However if your problem is due to this residue build up, it might be
worth trying to remove it. Have a look on the MIS site for instructions
on filling the older type of cart. It will show you how to remove this
residue. Basically its just a matter of using a bottom fill adapter and
a large syringe, to withdraw the ink foam residue. You would have to
make sure that your carts are completely empty first, reservoir dry.
However I do not know if this would work. Probably best to get advice
from MIS.

Good luck.

Peter.

Elizabeth,

The new MIS EZ-refill 2200 and C86 carts have sponges over the outlets but
none in the reservoir where one fills the ink from a hole in the top.

I'm not sure what the maximum number of refills is with the new MIS carts.
I have yet to have one go bad.

I do think that one should refill them before the printer says the cart is
empty. In particular, I think they should be re-filled before the
sponge-less reservoir is empty so that air is never next to the channel
between that connects the 2 sections. I'd keep them relatively full.
Hopefully the "foam" will never get down to the outlet area and never dry.

I also put tape over the air inlet on those that don't already have it. The
end of the channel is, of course, open so that air can get into the cart. I
presume the purpose of this design is to keep as little air from circulating
into the cart as possible.

If the sponge over the outlet does go dry, I suspect there could be problems
re-wetting it.

> Does anyone sell carts without sponges?

The new 1280 carts are sponge-less, but I have not seen that design for the
2200.

Among other things, they act as filters.

Paul,

Is it possible to refill the EZ fill carts while they are in the printer? Or
do they have to be removed for refilling? I use the SSC utility to reset the
chips while they are in my 1280. I used to fill the old sponge carts while
in the printer to avoid introducing air into the nozzles during the change and
wonder if I can do the same with the EZ's without interrupting the venting
system.

Tom,

Since I need to reset the chips, I have not tried to re-fill the carts while
they are in the printer. One thing that could be a problem is that without
the stopper in the cart it might start to drain out too fast. Assuming you
worked fast, this might not be a problem.

Give it a try and let us know what happened.

Hi:

Just order the ones without the sponge. Just found out about them
myself. I only got 3 to 4 refills out of the others.

Jeff

Are you guys sure of that? I have the refillable cartridges for the 21/2200
and they have foam in the side that feeds the print head. NO problems and I
have loaded the cartridges quite a number of times. Also, if there are air
bubbles developing it is not the fault of the foam but rather the poppet
valve when taking the cartridge out. I find any air bubbles can be removed
by turning the cartridge up and giving it a squeeze. I do not need to
"prime" the cartridges every time I refill them - only once on first load.

Sorry I should have referred to it as "sponge" to be consistent with the
earlier posts.
