Epson 7500 quality question

Epson 7500 quality question

2005-04-07 by Bernie Ess

Hello,

I went through the group search but did not really find an answer. I
am thinking about getting a wide format printer this year. Basically
it would be a 7600, however a used 7500 is much less expensive.

However I wonder how the quality is compared to the 7600. Actually I
use the 2100, and I guess that the 7600 is rather similar to it. Is
there a visible difference in quality tothe 7600?

Are there other disadvantages of the 7500? Are there good b&w prints
to be made with the Bowhaus or QTR RIP and the Epson original inks or
would I have to install quad black inks?

Thank you,

Bernie

The 7500 has larger, non-variable dot and, as such, is less flexible than
the 7600. For example, while a rip allows good B&W with the UC inkset on a
7600, that can't be done with the 7500. The dedicated B&W UT7 inkset in the
7600 also allows for a much wider range of tones than is possible with the
7500 and the UT1 inkset or the UT-FSN+ that I now have in my 7500.

That said, the 7500 has a better dmax with matte papers. When a very light
ink is used in the yellow position, the 7500 can make B&W prints that look
as good as the 7600 can do.

As to which would be more reliable, it is probably a question of how many
prints have been made on the particular printer. My 7500 has never missed a
beat; my 7600 is currently inoperative.

The 2200 I have has a better matte dmax than the 7600 I have.

If you want to make color and B&W, there is not contest -- get the 7600.
The 7500 is only competitive if you're going to be using it as a dedicated
B&W printer.

Good luck with whatever you get.

As a dedicated B/W printer, the 7500 would be good, as a color
printer it can be very good, if you work hard enough at it. But it
will never be good at both at the same time. If you can afford a
7600, that would be a good choice.

And, I'll bite... Paul what's wrong with your 7600?

It may be time for new dampers. I think the machine had some miles on it
before I bought it. (Frankly, I didn't shop. It was my brother's, and his
widow needs all the help she can get.) It worked fine at first, including
with the UT7 inkset. I re-filled the UT7 carts and believe I forgot to suck
the air out of one of the carts. At any rate, I ended up with a persistent
bad nozzle check with one jet that would not clear. So, I'm letting it sit
with MIS flushing fluid for a few days now. This may well clear it, but I'm
thinking it might be worth just replacing the dampers -- which I've never
done, but it doesn't seem like it's that hard of expensive.

Doesn't look all that hard. Do you have the part number? I know the
dampers for the 75/9500 are around $12 each, so I would expect the
76/9600 to be about the same. There are also more aggressive cleaning
fluids available, if some new ink works, I'll be buying a bunch of that
cleaning fluid too. Not sure which version MIS sells, but the
manufacturer has two different versions, one called cleaner, one called
flushing fluid.

These inks may have a new matte and photo black, but not sure yet, the
samples came in a couple of days ago, and I haven't cleaned my printer
out yet to try them. If the matte black is different from the Eboni I
use now, I'll let you know.

Thank you for everyone who answered. Difficult choice it seems. Except
that the 7600 is hard to be found used at a reasonable price,
everything else seems to go infavor of the 7600 which is just a more
modern, versatile printer.

Maybe if I can get a very cheap 7500 used (they seem to be difficult
to sell at all, so...) I'll try it out, otherwise I wait for a 7600 to
show up on my horizon.

Hi Mark,

Do you have a link to that company?
I have to pay ca $25 (7500 printer) for a damper
and ca $135 for the maintenance kit including the
waste ink pads.

Any UK member who knows if there are any
companies dealing with Epson parts in UK?

TIA
Hans

Companies in the US that I have dealt with:

www.vancebaldwin.com
www.agson.com
www.nationalparts.com

I don't know if they ship outside of the US (maybe Canada and
Mexico). Mostly I've dealt with Vance Baldwin for my parts. Heads for
the 75/9500 are around $100 each USD, maint. kit was $125 a couple of
years ago. Dampers were $11.72 (I think) just about 6 months ago.
Most of this stuff is not stocked, so it may take a couple of weeks
to get the parts you need. I recommend ordering more dampers than you
need, so that you have spares, you might consider having a spare head
in stock too. Part number for the heads is F055070 and is now the
replacement part for both heads. Dampers were part number 1056149,
and maint. kit was 1058462. Those numbers are for the 9500, so there
may be slightly different numbers for the 7500.

Thanks a lot, I will take a look at your suggestions.
The stuff is not stocked hear either. Think they take from UK.
