I was considering switching my Epson 4000 over to MIS UltraChrome equivalents, mainly for cost savings. Is anyone using these inks in a 4000? If so, how do you like them and how do they compare to the Epson UC inks? Do you buy the filled cartridges or refill your own? Any clogging, Dmax, color gamut, or other issues? Any fading or permanence problems? Any final words of advice or caution? Thanks alot, Lou

Lou, Yes. I'm using MIS UC equivalents in my 4000. I also subsituted PKN for PK and LKN (UT7 LK) for LK. I didn't bother flushing when I switched, but I did print some purge files to hasten the transition. Obviously you need to re-profile all of your papers, but not a big problem. I bought two sets of empty carts and refill from bulk inks. No clogging problems, but I haven't been using the MIS inks very long (just starting to use my second set of inks). Carl

Thanks, Carl. What do you think of the color gamut, Dmax, etc? Is it as good as the UC inks? The MIS site claims implies better results on glossy paper (I'm assuming they means less bronzing). Have you compared profiles in a 3D gamut plotting program such as ColorThink? Thanks, Lou --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Carl Schofield <scho@m...> wrote: > Lou, > > Yes. I was using the older version Image Specialists Ultra inks (MIS calls them GP Archival) in my 9500, they were turning out gamuts nearly as large as the UC replacements (Ultra 2). There is a new UltraPro ink that has really nice gamut, but you will need a good RIP with ink limiting for the primary and secondary colors. It's a heavier pigment load, so clogging will be increased. Gloss differential is reduced, but it looks like they had to reduce the dmax a little to accomplish this. I don't do much in the way of gloss/luster, so I don't have much use for the PK ink. When I ploted the gamut and compared it to the R1800 latest profiles, I was pretty close in the colors, but the dmax is a bit higher. A little more optimizing should have gotten the colors even closer, but I'm switching inks back to the matte black to set things up for normal use. Reds and yellows are just plain fantastic. The matte black is slightly better than Eboni. Luster paper compared is here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/Greg_E/UPr1800Comp.gif compared to HP 130 that I built some profiles for is here: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/Greg_E/UltraPro.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v329/Greg_E/UltraPro2.jpg Please note, the HP130 comparison was done with the matte black ink on luster paper. The papers in these comparisons were not the same paper, just the same type. I'm looking forward to seeing what this ink can do on German Etching, and the Intelicoat cotton/poly canvas. If you are interested in this new ink, please contact me off list, I may try to put a buying group together so that everyone can get this ink at cost, minimum order is 1 gallon per color, or somewhere above $2000 USD for an order, hence the need to pool money. I'm also trying to work out some kind of discount for the RIP I am testing with this ink.
