I have to say the the Wacom tablet has raised the
level of control of making selections a huge amount.
It has gone from a struggle to a joy. One try and you
will never use a mouse with PS again.

Which size tablet for the Intuos3 would you recommend for photography alone
(i.e. no graphic design)?

Brian,

The larger the tablet the more control you have and
the less effected by hand wiggles your selections will
be. I use the 9x12 and it's size has made selections
real easy. The smaller you go the more precise you
need to be. I have heard others say the 6x9 works for
them. I'm a photographer because I can't draw to save
my life and I used to have a real hard time with a
mouse. The tablet fixes all that.

I have the 6X9 because I just couldn't handle paying the extra $ at the
time for the 9x12. As it is it fits in the case with my laptop and the
9x12 won't. Just a lucky miscalculation.

Once I have my new printer, my Canon Eos1 mark II , Sony z Hi Def camera
and Honda Gold Wing I'll definitely buy the 9x12 for my workstation :-)

Kidding aside, get the largest you can.

FWIW - Contrary to other's suggestions that bigger is better, for several
years I've been using the 4x5 Inutuos II and now the III and have been
thoroughly pleased with its size. I originally bought a 9x12 and not only
did it take up more desk space and was unwieldy, my arm got tired after
having to make such large moves. I also use a 4x5 Graphire II for on-site
gallery demos and although not nearly as sensitive as the Intuos it's also
sufficient. For selections, burn/dodge, masking, etc., for me, I've yet to
encounter any shortcomings with the 4x5.

But a pen tablet is indispensable with PS!

I have the 6x8 Intuso III and am glad I did not get the larger one. I'm also glad I didn't get the smaller one, even though it takes up less desk realestate. With two monitors I think the 4x5 would be too small for my tastes.

Profiling a c86 for a new paper

2005-05-13 by Peter De Smidt

I've got some Olympus 200629 Pictorico Premium Photo Glossy Inkjet Paper
on the way, and I'd like use the Epson c86 driver's settings, as Paul
does with a number of papers. Paul, how do you go about figuring out
what settings to use?

RE: [Digital BW] Profiling a c86 for a new paper

2005-05-13 by Paul Roark

Peter,

I use a 21-step test file and just see how the print looks with everything
at 0 first. Then it's really trial and error to get acceptable separation
in the shadows and good contrast in the midtones and highlights. I use a
densitometer, but you can just see what looks good to you.

I'll be curious how that paper looks with the C86. My experience with
Pictorico glossy materials is that they show every dot and defect.

Good luck.

I'm one that said get the largest one you can get, yet on my 6x8 when
wanting to go from one side of the screen to another I was wondering how
much of a journey it would be if I had a 9x12. One of those quite voices
so to speak. Thanks..I no longer have discontent ..well at least in that
area :-)

One aspect of the Wacom size-decision to be considered (or did I miss
it in previous posts?)--is that you may intend to use the included
Wacom wireless mouse. In that case, keep in mind that this mouse
functions only within the active tablet area. I have the Intuous3 4x5,
and its size seems quite adequate for pen use in Photoshop; but I also
am frustrated that the 4x5 area is considerably smaller than a typical
mouse-pad, and consequently the mouse frequently crosses (stalls)
"out-of-bounds", making me yearn for a larger tablet (or my old
optical wireless mouse).

Re: [Digital BW] Wacom Size??

Wacom's online size recommendation (mentioned earlier by someone) has
primarily to do with monitor size: bigger>bigger. The recommendation
for a 19" monitor is 6X8 (very classy: they didn't hint/imply
bigger>better).

As well, on my crowded desktop I normally have no more than 6X8 in
which to move my Logitek optical mouse (wired)...so I'm used to that
range of movement.

Just to add a side note to this: I have a 6 X8, dual monitors. All seems
in balance to me. I also use my main mouse (except on the right side, I'm
left handed). So I have three mice (mouse, pen, mouse). I've learned to
use them all at different times and I find that my mouse hand does not get
all bound up. I am more relaxed.

I use a 4x5 Wacom Graphire tablet with wireless mouse on a dual monitor setup
(2560 x 1024 pixels) on a Windows machine. It works fine, and is the only mouse
I use.

The mouse driver is clever. Slow, deliberate movement of the mouse gives very
precise control of the on-screen pointer -- a slow traverse across the tablet
moves the pointer about 600 pixels across part of the screen. Quick mouse
gestures give bolder moves on screen -- a fast traverse across the tablet sends
the pointer the full 2560 pixels from one side of the screen to the other.

Phil, assuming the Intuos works the same way, if you stick to using only the
Wacom mouse for a while, your brain will reprogram itself and your problem will
disappear.
