Quality of Color Neg Film vs B&W

Quality of Color Neg Film vs B&W

2005-06-13 by antmagrat

I am considering shooting only color film (overseas) and having it processed before I leave
for the states, (either E-6 or C-41). Then scanning and using grayscale for B&W. Is this
crazy? Will I lose image quality not using black and white film? I am a Quad tone fine art
printer and make 24x30 images all the time.

Help?

Yes. Shoot B&W film and bring it back for processing if you can not
find a local lab that can process it. Ask (force) them to do a hand
inspection at airports.

Have you considered shooting Chromagenic B&W? It processes in C-41
chemistry, but produces a printable B&W negative.

I've had good luck in the few conversions form E100VS or RSXII 50 I've done.

Re: [Digital BW] Quality of Color Neg Film vs B&W

2005-06-13 by will gibson

Margaret,

I'd test the 400CN from Kodak and / or the XP2 from Ilford. They're C-41
films without the colored dyes. So there are 3 layers of emulsion. And
low grain for the speed. Very smooth in tonal gradations and forgiving
in exposure. But the negatives are definitely different than other BW
films, so testing a roll or two thru the whole process including the
scans is the way to go. But then any lab can scratch the negs during
processing and it's harder to find good wetlabs anywhere. Hard to tell
what airport security will do. I tried to travel with Infra red and was
fine with the 120 but 35 mm had to be checked out; in daylight.

Good Luck

Re: [Digital BW] Quality of Color Neg Film vs B&W

2005-06-14 by Margaret Stratton

Thank you for your reply. When you say the XP2 is "different" what
does that connote? Are you saying the films are quality comparable
(i.e. latitude, grain, resolution) but you need to learn how to use
them properly before using theme in the field?

Do you know if there is a website where I can do further research?

Last time I was in Italy I processed all my B&W film before leaving,
with Pyro. Not a great experience but I came home with the goods!

Thanks again,

Margaret

I've done it and it works great! Only don't use greyscale. Use the
channel mixer!

RE: [Digital BW] Quality of Color Neg Film vs B&W

2005-06-14 by Craig Sanders

I would absolutely shoot in color then convert to B&W.

There are several methods available, ranging from simple desaturation to
using the channel mixer to copying each channel into a separate layer then
masking them and "painting" your B&W filters in place. This last method (not
mine, came from John Caponigro) gives the most control. The method
effectively allows you to place filters on your camera (as you would for
shooting in B&W), but the color and density of the "filters" you apply are
infinitely variable. So, for example, say you shot a tree with a dramatic
sky behind it. If you were shooting in B&W, you would probably opt for a
yellow or orange filter to darken the sky. However, this will also lighten
the greens in the tree. Using the method I'm talking about, you can
effectively apply an orange filter to the sky only, and possibly a green
filter to the tree, actually darkening the foliage.

Craig

Thanks Craig,

That helps a lot. Do you know if there is a particular color film you
would recommend? I would like to test it before I go off to Europe.

Thanks again,

Margaret

Re: [Digital BW] Quality of Color Neg Film vs B&W

2005-06-16 by helen_bach2003

Margaret,

I hope that you don't mind me jumping in here. I've switched to Kodak
Ultra 100 and 400 as my all-round films, mainly because of their
extreme scene brightness range (around 13 stops, thanks to their
overexposure latitude) that is all usable when scanned. In low light
I use Portra 800, pushing it two stops if necessary.

Best,
Helen

I'd also recommend Kodak negative colour films (in my case, Royal Supra,
which is I think unfortunately discontinued). They scan much better than Fuji in
terms of grain particularly.
In extremis genuine Black and White migth still have an edge though.
