Panorama Print Length with QTR and 9600

Panorama Print Length with QTR and 9600

2005-06-17 by john dean

Update,

Wanted to fill you in on the final outcome last night with my panorama printed
out of Photoshop and qtr.

After I set up the qtr 2.2( new version) I was able to complete my project.

QTR functioned beautifully. My final print was 20"x170" ( 14 feet long) on
William Turner rag. This is as large as Photoshop would let me go. It took
several hours to complete. I lost count. I used the slower qtr setting. The file
was sent to the 9600 at 170 dpi in greyscale 2.2. The resolution was just fine
and the tonality was quite smooth. I normally use at least 240 dpi but this
worked.

I tried the new version of PS CS2 and found no difference in its ability to
handle larger files on my Mac. My final pixel count was 3400 pixels by 28900
pixels = 32,300 total pixels I assume?

It was nice not having to tile out of Illustrator and keep the control of qtr. But
apparently for anything longer ( please no ) I would have to use Illustrator or
buy Studio Print which I should have anyway.......

The Photoshop limit was a real surprise to me. Although PS CS can make
and edit files larger than 30000 pixels in width or height, you can't print them.
(The limit is for the width and height in pixels not the sum). So you can
go as large as a 30000x30000 pixel image. But once you step over to 30001
pixels you lose the Print command as well as a bunch of other functions.
No printing seems pretty drastic to me.

But it does appear that you can save as a TIFF file, read it into Preview and
print from there.

BTW, from Epson literature it looks like the 7600/9600 are limited at 15meters
or about 49 feet.

Roy,

The limit must have to do with the data storage limits?

How to do you that, read into preview ? That is new to me.

So your saying out of Photoshop we should be able to reach this length - (49
feet ) in QTR? Now that would be something, althought it would probably take
all day and all night to print on the finer settings.

I imagine the 15 meter limit is pretty arbitrary but that's what the Epson document
says. Some of the older limits were caused by only having 16 bits for the
page length but the newer printers all have 32 bits for page length. That would
give absurdly long prints so they probably just picked 15 meters.

Yes, you can save the huge TIFF from PS and read into Preview (Mac's generic viewer).
I didn't actually print but the Print command was enabled.

Temp files could get humongous and might bring most machines to their knees.
So although 49 feet is theoretically possible it might not be practical.

Has anyone used Lyson's Darkroom Gloss 320gsm Media with piezo inks
(Cone's)?

This paper is designed for dye inks. PiezoTones are pigment inks. What
you'll get with PiezoTones on this paper is plenty of gloss differential
and I suspect a poor Dmax also. Not a paper I would use with PiezoTones.

Mark,
I did try that and it definitely does not work. Not worth anyone going to the
trouble to find out....
