OT: Great photo locations? CA Central Coast

2005-07-17 by Jerry Blanton

Hi,

I know this is off-topic but I was wondering if anyone could email me off list with some
advice. My girlfriend are planning a trip to California in late August (San Francisco ->
Monterey -> Big Sur -> Oceano -> Santa Barbara) and I was wondering if any of the many
wonderful photographers here have suggestions for "must shoot" locations for any of the
above itinerary?

The dunes of Oceano are high on our list but other than fantastic coastline and whatever we
stumble across, we don't have any specific destinations in mind. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Jerry

Pebble Beach 17 Mile Drive has some nice spots, but it costs money. The Lone
Cypress is a famous image, but it's also their trade mark, so they chase you
down and shoot you if you publish an image of it.

The Bixby Bridge on route 1 is a popular subject. Just north of it on the
water side is a restaurant or inn with a long driveway that's a good vantage
point. Also, to its north there's a graded dirt road heading up the canyon
that gives a good view of it from the other side.

Further to the south, the terrain levels out, and the ocean views are wider,
even though they're still rocky.

The Hearst Castle at San Simeon is pretty spectacular, if you feel like
taking a tour, but I think you need reservations.

The village of Cambria is fairly cute.

Further south, Cayucos and Morro Bay are nice towns. Right in Morro Bay,
there's a state park and a road up to the top of the hill which has a nice
view.

My address is actually on Highway 1, so I see some of this stuff every day. You've got the high points identified, but, if you have time, just take any turnoff and follow your nose. There is so much natural beauty here. The grapes are in full dress now, so the countryside is very appealing. However, the vineyards can be a real challenge to photograph.

Some of the beautiful places are only accessible by foot. Point Sal, near Vandenberg, is a great place. But the road has been closed for some time. If you have time to take the walk, it's worth it.

The Guadeloupe/Oceano dunes are great. It's an ify deal to photograph due to the fog that is present this time of year. While you'll need to walk some, the Guadeloupe Dunes are nicer than the Pismo/Oceano dunes because the Guadeloupe Dunes are closed to vehicles, Pismo/Oceano is not.

And, obviously, don't forget Point Lobos.

One other thing. While ist's not something to be paranoid about, you need to remember that the Central Coast is rattlesnake country. If you're hiking keep this in mind. I've only seen a few here, but they're around.

Have fun.

Hi Jerry:
Add Pt. Lobos State Park to your list. It's just south of Carmel (which is
south of Monterey) and has picturesque trees, rocks, surf, and (usually) sea
otters. You'll need a long lens for the otters.

Personally I would sacrifice any of these locations for a day
or two in Yosemite. Even with the crowds at this time of year.

two great spots often overlooked:
1. In southern Monterey county, on highway 1, just south of Lucia is Limekilm State Park.
easy walk about one mile in, along on of the prettiest creeks we've ever seen.
2. In Los Osos is the Los Osos Oaks Park (correct name?), just off local highway. again,
easy walk into one of the most photographic wooks we've ever visited. many, many wild
trees to shoot.
enjoy,

Try to visit a few of the California Missions; San Juan Bautista, Carmel,
Santa Barbara. Early California history and culture with exquisite
exterior/interior architecture.

San Francisco is great for street photography...

Also, check out Alcatraz. Costs just $11 and that includes the
roundtrip boat. Best to go
on a weekday, first boat in the morning before all the crowds.

My site below has an Alcatraz section if you're interested...

I recommend you buy a copy of the paperback "Bicycling the Pacific
Coast" by Kirkendall & Spring. Even if you're going by auto. It will
direct by down the coast by many back roads that will take you by many
places that most miss. Plus, it is incredibly informative. It's the
standard guide book for almost all bicycle tourists. BTW, Kirkendall's
"day job" is a photographer.

I live in FL but have bicycled from San Francsico to Santa Barbara
three times, always by myself. It's great. And don't let your
photography get in the way of a great trip.

One more thought, if there is any way you can take the Amtrak Coast
Starlight back from Santa Barbara, DO IT. It's almost as good as the
drive down.

I used to live in Mill Valley north of San Francisco. You should go up Mt. Tamilpias where
you can see Muir Woods National Monument for the redwoods and, a very nice small beach
near there called Muir Beach and Stenson Beach. Also Pepple Beach between Santa Cruz
and San Fran. And of course Big Sur as stated earlier. Then there is Bodega Bay along the
coast up from Marin, where Hitchcocks The Birds was filmed. If you have time the best
thing to do is just take HIghway 1, Shoreline Highway from Santa Barbara all the way to
Seattle... why not take a week, life is short.

Having only one week to travel 1 from Santa Barbara to Seattle would just be frustration. A month maybe, but that's not really enough time either. Especially if photography is the objective. Having to wait on the light, the tide, etc., not to mention walking to get to the best places.

Soooo much to see, so little time.

For additional emphasis: if you fail to spend at least a few hours at
Point Lobos, then you'll have missed one of the real gems along that
coast. Yes, you might not improve upon Edward Weston's Point Lobos
images, but it's worth the visit to inhale the inspiration... So,
indeed, do _not_ forget Point Lobos. I'd advise possibly leaving out
the "20-mile drive" in order to make time available!!!!
