Anyone using 4000 for BO?

Anyone using 4000 for BO?

2005-08-09 by claudej1@aol.com

After having every printer imaginable to do Quads/hex/whatever, I used UT-7
on a 2200 which I no longer have. I find that the 2880 BO prints on a 4000 are
amazing....when I want a warm look. I really like the Semi Matte Epson paper
with a light coat of Satin Lacquer....not quite air-dried FB look, but darn
nice with great highlights, Dmax, and scale. I still have UT-1 on a 7500 and
looking forward the new inksets in the near future. QTR or IJC/OPM perhaps??

I think the 4000 has the very fine screening for BO, more so thatn the 2200
did.

BTW, Dmax is overrated as a singular component. You can get a high Dmax from
Pictorico fine art "matte" paper, but it appears to have a sticky coating
over it. Best Dmax ever (2 point something) but the prints look like crap.

The 4000 does have a more random dither pattern, unlike the 2200's
squigglies. It gives a smoother look. I have a very fine 4000 BO
print from Carl Schofield. It's on the wall here in my studio, a
beautiful print.

As for the warm tone, you are not restricted to that. Papers such as
Condor BW, Merlin Smooth and Kayenta give a nice range of cool to cold
tones.

Clayton

Also if you are using the Epson matte black, you could change to one
of the third party matte black inks to get a more neutral "color" to
the full black parts.

As someone else suggested, third party matte black can make a
difference. I use MIS Eboni Black in place of Epson's Matte Black.
It gives a more neutral BO print.

I agree with Tony about the "cooler" black from the
Eboni ink, but don't settle for just one ink. Just as
different papers will provide varying degrees of
coolness or warmth and thus allow you to achieve the
desired final print tone, so do the inks. If I were
trying to achieve something more akin to carbon, or
light sepia, I would use the Epson Matte Black and a
paper such as Premier Art Fine press.. If I were
trying to achieve something more of a selenium
tone I would use Eboni with a paper like Moab Kayenta.
It takes a fair amount of front end effort to
categorize all of the paper/ink combinations but once
you have done all of that, you are set for the future
and will make wonderful prints that meet your needs.

Woody Spedden

By the way, if you have not already done so you should
read the tomes provided by Clayton
Jones.(http://www.cjcom.net/digiprnarts.htm) He has
already done an amazing amount of work on classifying
paper ink combinations and could save you tons of
time. The particular article for this work is entitled
"The Great Paper Chase."
