Intro and question - R800 - BO - K7 - Other?

Intro and question - R800 - BO - K7 - Other?

2005-08-10 by khaledaboumrad

Hello to all forum members. My name is Khaled Aboumrad, I'm a
photographer, I'm
Mexican, I live in Paris and I work in black and white. I worked as a
fashion and comercial
photographer for many years until I got bored of it and decided to
dedicate myself
completely to my personal work. I've been printing traditionally
since I
started in 93 and latelely
I've tried different digital approaches with a few labs around Paris,
the problem is that it is
too expensive and I can't have as much control as I'd like. I'm in
the process of editing a
new portfolio so I'm looking for a way to print it with the highest
quality possible while not
going broke at the same time.

I decided to do it myself for this reasons so I've been doing some
trials with my printer
(R800) with no results, later I found Clayton's and Paul's websites
(which I found very
enlightening I must say) and this forum and looked at all the posts
regarding this printer
and it's fake BO etc. so my questions are:

1.- Is it possible to print BO using QTR with this printer?

2.- Is eboni ink compatible? Or will it clog the print heads?

3.- Would it be better to wait for the Piezo K7 inks? (Not good since
I'm in a hurry to start
printing)

4.- Can you suggest other solutions without changing printers?

What I'm looking for is to be able to print with carbon only inks in
matte paper, as close to
neutral as possible (a little warm is ok), deep deep blacks and
strong fade resistance.

I appreciate any help or suggestion that you may bring and I'm
looking forward to
contribute to the forum in any way I can.

Thank you.

Khaled

Khaled,

I'm sure there is a good B&W solution for the R800. MIS does sell a matte
black for it (see http://www.inksupply.com/r800ink_org.cfm), but I'm not
sure if it is Eboni. (I suspect it is.)

If 8x10, A4 is all you need, a C86 (or similar) with MIS EZ inks or R200
with UT2 may be a way to go that is affordable.

Typo -- I'm NOT sure there is a good B&W solution for the R800. Or, to
avoid misunderstanding, I've never seen a good R800 B&W print.

Re: Intro and question - R800 - BO - K7 - Other?

2005-08-11 by Clayton Jones

Hello Khaled,

Welcome to the forum. I can answer one of your questions

>1.- Is it possible to print BO using QTR with this printer?

It is possible to print BO with QTR, I'm experimenting with that right
now, so yes if QTR works with the R800. It's easy to modify an
existing curve file and set all inks besides K to "not used", then
save it with a new filename. The challenge I've found is that the
resulting ramp is not anything like the ramp that the Epson drivers
give in BO mode, so the prints look pretty bad.

Epson obviously knows how to do it, so what I'm doing is modifying the
QTR curve to make a ramp as much as possible like the Epson one. I'm
not done yet but am making progress. I'll be happy to share the curve
once I get it finished.

>What I'm looking for is to be able to print with carbon only inks
>in matte paper, as close to neutral as possible (a little warm is
>ok)

If you're using BO then, as you probably know, you get the tone you
want by using the appropriate paper. When you use a carbon only
grayscale ink set everything stays pretty warm, even on the cooler
papers. This is because the lighter inks tend to be warmer than the
K. So while Eboni by itself can go cold on a paper such as Condor BW,
when warmer lighter inks are mixed in they override the K and keep the
overall tone pretty warm. This is why most of the carbon based
grayscale inksets use color ink toners. They allow control over these
things and give a wider range of tones. So if you want carbon only
and cool tones, then BO is a good way to do it, especially with Eboni.

>deep deep blacks and strong fade resistance.

You'll get top-notch results in both these areas with BO. The only
thing is the graininess, as I'm sure you're aware. You either like it
or you don't.

Regards,
Clayton

Re: Intro and question - R800 - BO - K7 - Other?

2005-08-11 by andrew

I print B&W from my R800 using Epson Premium Glossy, Ultrachrome inks
and a custom ICC profile. To my eye the prints are damn-near neutral,
punchy and don't seem to give anything away to the Ilford Multigrade
prints my wife used to produce in the darkroom. They have none of the
colour shifts and shimmery rainbow look of 2100 (2200) B&W prints. I
realise they're not the same as a fine-art print on a matte paper --
and I do some of that using QTR and Photo Rag on my 2100 -- but to me
they are at least reasonable, if not good, prints. Now I freely admit
that I'm no expert and I'm more than keen to keep learning, so I'm
completely happy to be enlightened about their failings.

Thank you for your answers, it's funny how true is this saying that
the more you know, the
more you realize that you don't know...

I'm sure that what does the difference must be your custom icc
profile since my tests have
all been done with standard profiles and I can see (subtly) casts in
middle to light grays.

Thanks Paul, I'll write to MIS to ask them.

This would probably be the easiest solution but I suffer from a bad
case of GAS (Gear
Acquisition Syndrome) and I'm in a phase of recovery trying to only
use the stuff that I
already own :) Seriously though, I've been a newbie at lots of
things and after a few
expensive mistakes, I've learned to ask questions to the people that
know before I get my
feet wet. (Right now one of those mistakes seems to be the R800! So
much for
experience!) I'll probably invest in a larger printer in the future
but right now I need to
learn with what I've got.

Thanks Clayton please do share the curve, I guess the one you're
doing will be for your
2200 and I'll have to modify it for the R800, is this correct?

I'm all for graininess so I think that BO is what better suits what
I'm looking for. The only
thing that worries me is that Eboni is normally used in printers with
4 or more picoliter
droplets and the R800's are 1.5 picoliters, I don't know if this can
clog the print heads, I
don't even know if I should worry about this. On the other hand, the
small size could help
to reduce this graininess that some people don't like about BO, what
do you think?

Thanks again for your anwers.

It's Eboni, and the web page has been changed to reflect this.

I see the R200 is a 6-ink printer. Is there anything that
differentiates it from the 1280 other than output size?

Separate carts, 5760dpi resolution, smaller ink drops, double the number of
ink nozzles, it's all on Epson's website.

That makes it sound like a *better* printer than the 1280.
Why's it so much cheaper?

Ben,

It's only half the size, A4 instead of A3+, and it is competing in a much
more crowded part of the market.

Is there a source for pigment carts for B&W printing for the R200? Even
BO would be OK. If not, what should i use to fill the Black for BO
printing. I can't seem to find them on the MIS site.

I just ordered a C86 from Amazon which after various rebates will cost
me only 39.95 + 5.95 S&H and i've ordered the EZ sets from MIS so as to
have an inexpensive small format printer at home in addition to a 2200
at my studio. But the R200 is also available locally for 79.95 and i
was wondering if that would be a good choice as well if i can find
pigment ink for it...

Hello Michael,

MIS does sell them (I don't know where they are on the web site, I
just call them on the phone and order stuff). I'm using them with my
R200 with MIS Eboni ink for BO printing. The R200 is doing a very
good job, and no clogs so far. Have been using it for a couple of
months now and have yet to need a cleaning cycle. I don't even bother
doing nozzle checks.

Clayton
