What to do with a partially disabled 1160

What to do with a partially disabled 1160

2005-08-12 by Peter Marquis-Kyle

I have a 1160 that has come back from my local Epson technician with the
news that the magenta head is, indeed, hopelessly blocked. I also have a
bunch of spongeless carts, bottles of MIS UT-quad inks, and QuadToneRIP.

I still want to make prints. I'd appreciate your comments on what I
should do. So far, I have thought of these options:

1
Have the print head replaced. This is likely to cost as much as the
printer is worth, and I'm not inclined to do that...

2
Just load the eboni K and enjoy the BO experience. An easy option...

3
Load the M ink in the Y chamber of the carts. Make a new QTR curve based
on the UT-EEnhMatte-warm curve, but with the M ink curve assigned to the
Y channel. I don't know exactly how to do this, but I guess it should
not be beyond me, though the results are too warm for my taste. This
seems like a bit of farting around, for a result I don't really want...

4
Give up...

Your comments please, or other suggestions?

Peter;

My suggestion would be a variant of # two, but if the LK ink is too
warm, re-mix it to give you a good match for Eboni. I'm on my second
itteration (not complete enough to give details) of this, but the first
one consisted of: two parts UT-7 LK, one part standard MIS LK, and 1ml
magenta per 30ml of mix to take the yellow green out of it. Changing
the curve to use the Y channel is drop-dead easy, You'll figure it out
in half-hour tops, including reading time. You could coceivably use the
remaining channel for a LLK and have a K3 setup. or you could keep a
warm ink in it to give you sepia when needed. Have a go at it!

The 1160 does not need the FS-Y (lightest) ink to be smooth. FS-M is
sufficient. So, I'd go with option #3.

Note that the 1160 variable-tone curves are based on using a toner in the Y
spot. The M spot then has a light ink that is about half way between the FS
Y and M inks. In the variable tone inksets, this light gray is pure carbon,
so you might not want to use it. The variable-tone warm curve, that cuts
out the toner, will give you an idea of what a curve that just uses 3 inks
would look like.

Peter, I also had a really bad clog on my 1160 Ultratone ink 'M' head
the other day, and thought it was all over, but I reverted back to
the windex fix, and it worked just fine (didn't even have to wait
over night, just a few minutes of soaked paper towel under the
heads)...then proceeded to print a number of flawless prints w/o any
cleaning cycles. If you aren't familiar with this windex fix, try
search for "clog from hell" or some such...I think it was posted on
this forum a couple years ago, but can't remember for sure. Good
luck, Mark
