Ordered a 5D today

Ordered a 5D today

2005-08-24 by claudej1@aol.com

I just made prints of their sample files from the Japan Web site on my 7600
(I did a BO print on Semi Matte of the B&W portrait sample) and a color print
of the macro shot. Very nice indeed. There are very few times where I need
more than 2-8 megapixels to earn a living, but this sure gives you a lot of
bang for the buck.

I was within days of buying a 1Ds MkII of the shelf, but decided to try this
instead. With a $4,250 net savings vs. the 1Ds, the 5D provides a better
value. The Canon rep. happened to be at the store when I walked in and he said
the ISO 3200 perfomance was unreal. He also said the color rendering would be
similar to the 20d, which I found better than the 1D Mk II when shooting
Jepegs in camera.

With the 5th generation (hence the name) CMOS technology with a generous 8.2
Micron well site pitch and the 20d's superb 3-stage noise reduction, this
promises to be a lightweight winner with heavyweight performance.

Canon came up with an excellent 10-22 mm lens for the APS-C chip, but left
the 1D MkII's APS-H chip behind. We really needed a good 12-24mm or 14-28mm
wide angle for that, but it was a no show. So now with this new full frame chip,
I can do extreme wide angle shots with their excellent 17-40 mm L lens
instead of resorting to a 14mm of lesser optical performance for the same AOV as a
17 on a full frame camera. The 14 represents a pretty extreme view for very
rare occasions on full frame. Otherwise the 8mm fisheye is the last resort.

If the 5D turns out to be less than a stellar improvement, I will just sell
it for 10% less a month later and call it a cheap rental. Then I'll just get
the big dog, which should be availavle for less than 7 grand at that time. Go
Canon.

Claude

I know I'm a bit OT here, but one quick question for Claude.
I'm about to buy my first digital camera. A used Eos 1Ds is about the same
price as a new 5D. For the same $3500.00, which would you recommend/
Right now I'm a Nikon user (F5) with many lenses, which I will keep as I do
like the film look for personal work, but for business it might be time to
make the switch.
I shoot a lot of editorial available light stuff for Colleges with Fuji 800
color neg., which looks great under any lighting conditions, so I would be
looking for a digital camera that would perform well under those
constraints, at least 800 speed, with minimal noise in the shadows.
TIA.

David,

The 5D will have much better high ISO performance than the old Canon 1Ds or the Nikon
D2X. My Canon XT at 1600 ISO is incredible!

Regarding the below links: All the bodybuilding shots were at 1600 ISO; around 1/200th sec
shutter; f4 using 70-200f4 L....handheld.

The shots at the below link from the waist up are half and third cropped frames. I might have
over sharpened on some but I like the grittiness.

Also this can be better answered at Rob Galbraith forums:

Noise-wise, they look pretty good, but the red channel is pretty obviously
clipped on the highlights. I guess that's the tradeoff.

Congratulations on your order. I, too, printed the B&W at the magnification
that would be required for a 16 x 20 -- quite nice indeed.

Some think the 16 - 35 is the better lens. See the Canon comments and MTF
curves at
<http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ProductCatIndexAct&fcategor
yid=151>

Wide angle is clearly the weak end. I stayed with the 24 2.8 prime with the
Rebel. Not only does it have the best MTF, but I also thought, and think
more likely now, that I'll end up with full frame.

Please remember the group topic. If you are going to discuss cameras
it should relate to their impact on B&W digital printing.

new Fuji film scans (was Re: [Digital BW] Ordered a 5D today)

2005-08-25 by Sam McCandless

David's post reminds me to ask for advice about how well Fujifilm's
new "Pro" color-print films scan (into RGB, for conversion in
Photoshop).

In the case of NPZ 800 Professional, I'm not sure it hasn't simply
been renamed Pro 800Z (and gone from $6 to $7 at B&H). Similarly, NPH
400 Professional is being renamed Pro 400H (and going from $5 to $7
at B&H). In both these cases, I think some redevelopment might have
preceded the name changing and price bumping. (If so, I guess the NPZ
is a bargain while it lasts.)

In the case of the NPC & NPS ISO-160 professional film, however, I
think the re-development and presumed improvement might be coinciding
with the change in name to Pro 160C and Pro 160S (and price hikes
from $5.50 to $6.50 at B&H). So I'm most curious to know what others
think of how well these new (I think) ISO-160 films scan.

I shoot the Fuji CZ800, the cheap stuff rather than the "pro" stuff, and I
can't see a difference when scanning and printing with the NPH stuff. My
custom photo labe printer can't see a difference either.
I've certainly seen differences in chrome films, but not in color neg films.
The CZ800 film is only $64.00 for 20 rolls from Calumet.

RE: new Fuji film scans

2005-08-25 by John Moody

I had to place an order at B&H, so just for fun, I ordered 1 roll of the
non-F velvia 100, and will scan it on a Nikon 8000.
Is anyone using this film, and making BW prints from it? I have not touched
my MF gear in over 2 years since getting the 1Ds, but miss looking at the
transparencies.

Best regards,
John Moody

Get the 5D, it has a much better spec generally including a faster image
processor and can offer increased flash exposure sophistication when used
with a 580EX.

I might just add it should hold it's resale value for quite a while.
