Epson 4000 and K7 question

Epson 4000 and K7 question

2005-08-28 by susanfleck46227

I have a 1280 with a CIS that I've been using for WN PiezoTones and the
images are very nice but the machine is slow and I'm tired of dealing with the
CIS.

I also have a 4000 and I'd like to switch to the K7 inkset on it. It sounds like,
though, that there are no curves available for the 4000. I can't justify afford a
Gretag EyeOne spectrophotometer at this time.

Does anyone know another way I could get a curve to use with PhotoRag? I
called IJM and they said they don't do that.

Also, I read that these inks could be installed in the 4000 without flushing. Do
you think it is feasible to use the printer for both color and K7 by simply
switching out the carts and running a few prints to clear the lines?

Thanks,

Susan

Go to ebay and look for an XRite 810 or similar
densitometer. Most of the "going out of business"
minilabs are selling such items at very very reduced
prices. You should be able to get one for 1/3 to 1/4
the price of an eye one.

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 4000 and K7 question

MIS published a procedure for switching inksets on the 4000, but I
don't know if it is applicable for UC to k7. Should be OK if the UC/
k7 inks are compatible. You could also just do purge prints until
the lines/dampers have been flushed. Does anyone know what the
volume of ink is in the lines and dampers of the 4000?

Hi Susan;

I don't know the exact volume of ink in the lines of that machine,
but I measured the 7600 at about 20ml per damper/line. Even at half
that, repeated switching would be time consuming and expensive. If
you need to do both color and B&W your best choice might be to leave
color inks (either UC or MIS equivalents with Eboni K) and run the
B&W with QTR. There is a good selection of curves available for the
4000, and you can make some pretty fair ones yourself without a
densitometer. It wouldn't be as smooth as the K7s but considering
the fine dots and high dither available, you would still get some
very good results.

Susan,

The 4000 curves for Roy Harrington's QuadTone Rip for Piezography
Neutral K7 inks are
nearing completion. Go sign up for the newsletter and you will be
notified, or fill out the
survey on the bottom of the main K7 page (especially if you would
like to see a K6 set for
the 1280). it may be slow, but....
