UT-FSN inks for Epson 2000P and QTR

UT-FSN inks for Epson 2000P and QTR

2005-10-14 by Johnny Eades

I notice the inks (UT-FSN) are available for the Epson 2000P printer.
I assume that QTR will let me create curves and ICC files for this
printer like I do my Epson 1280S printer. I do see QTR profiles for
that printer though. Does anyone have any experience along these
lines? I have a friend with the printer mentioned, but he says he
needs help from me. I've never used any printer other than the 1280
and would like to know if there are any things I need to be aware of
as far as major differences between the two printers.

I played with it a little, using the last version of QTR, on Premium Luster
or Premium Semigloss. I found that I got the best results skipping the black
ink entirely, because both the Epson PK and the Eboni had a slight gloss and
tone differential compared to the gray inks. I got pretty good results using
just the three grays, getting a density of about 2.5 by dumping a lot of the
dark gray ink on the paper. I never finished my experiments, though, as
other things came up, so I never perfected the curves. At some point, when I
try printing B&W again, I'll get the new QTR and pick up where I left off.

I found it to be a particularly good matte paper printer. I also print
glossy with the FSN+ inkset I have in my 7500.

I have a Readme file with my ealier Epson driver approach at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/2000P-FS-Readme.htm . Photoshop curves are at
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/2000P-FS-curves.htm .

So, you'll have some alternative workflows, one of which is done and has
curves.

Also, I suspect the new R200 EZ inks would be the best and easiest solution
for old hextone printers, for both an Epson driver approach and a QTR or
other, more automated approach.

The Epson driver by itself or with, at most, simple grayscale curves is a
nice option to have.

The R200 EZ hextone inks are essentially the UT2 - UT7 densities and carbon
inks, with a new FSN mix. It includes the 7500 FSN+ new middle neutral
gray. The target of the EZ inksets it not just the R200. The whole base is
hopefully covered reasonably well -- for both the Epson driver and other
approaches.

I hope the QTR guys see the breadth of the base that a simple ICC and/or
curves + linearization set might be able to reach. I think as we move
forward, the old base will benefit from the economies of scale of being
closely related.

I have put a new tutorial aimed at "EZ" manual linearization via PS curves
that can be loaded as transfer functions in the driver. We need a
non-Photoshop, open solution that utilizes the Epson driver and offers both
manual, visual and instrument linearization.

I limited the inks in my 7500 also to avoid flooding glossy papers.

I found that having two tanks putting dark gray ink down, I got a really
nice Dmax, but the surface of a solid black test patch had a very faint
mottled look. However, the ink seemed dry to the touch as quickly as the
lighter test patches, so it wasn't actually puddling. At some point I need
to experiment more. I'd certainly prefer to use real black ink, as it would
last longer, but the look was distinctly different from the grays on my step
wedges.

Paul,

Although in a large format printer it's a bit of a hassle, you might
consider mixing a custom PK that optimizes the load for the particular
printer. The MIS 2400 PK is a lower load than the MIS Pro PK. In fact, the
2400 PK is about the same as 50% MP PK and 50% LK. With these 2 PKs
(actually just the PK and LK would do) and with the new base, what I did for
the R200 was find the mix that gave a good balance between gloss
differential and density. With the R200 I was going for good Epson driver
performance. With that driver, the R200 had a particular problem of a
too-light 95% with glossy paper. So, it was actually performance at that
point that I was optimizing.
