1280 overspray

1280 overspray

2002-01-04 by daschkenas

I've been printing b&w with the epson 1280, NMC CIS and MIS dye
inks. The neutralality has been looking fantastic on LPM without
special profiles. What I'm seeing, however, is slight magenta
overspray on one side of the print, perpendicular to the head
movement. Head cleaning doesn't seem to help, nozzle checks look
fine, but when I make a print, a slight line of magenta is visible on
one edge of the print, the other 3 edges are clean and neat.
I called epson about it, and they are sending out another 1280, somI
will replace the cart holders and transfer the CIS.
My question is have others had a problem with overspray on the 1280.
The prints themselves look great, nothing is out of register or
allignment.
Last night I put some windex on the parking pad sponges and let it
sit overnight hoping that might solve the problem, but no such luck.
I don't recall seeing this problem when using oem carts.
Could the CIS be causing this to happen, I hope not because I love
the MIS Dyes and the CIS works beautifully.
I seem to recall someone saying that the 1280's often "oversprayed"
Is this true or am I imagining it.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
TIA.
David

David,

I don't have any answers for you but I do have a couple of questions
if you don't mind.

Does epson know you were using CIS and other inks other than epson
and then still honored their warranty? Did you run the unit with the
Epson provided carts first before installing CIS and if so were you
having the overspray issue then too? Just curious in case I face
similar issues with my new 1280.

btw..apologies to all regarding the "handle" dogdrum7 that
accompanies my posts. When I first signed on I didn't realize that
typing one of my email addresses would cause it to become the default
identifier. I have since tried to edit my profile and change it to my
actual name but it won't let me for some reason. Also because there
is another Tim here who preceded me I have added my last initial to
my signiature to avoid any confusion.

Re: [Digital BW] 1280 overspray

2002-01-04 by Daniel Perez

David,
I had the exact same problem on my 1270, MIS pigs, &
NMC CIS. However, the overspray on mine was more with
the cyan than magenta.
I took out the CIS cart and pushed it back in firmly
then set the paper thickness lever(+/0) to 0. That
fixed it for me. Although if I put the lever back to
the + setting, the overspray continues, though less
severe than before. I just print at the 0 setting.
It's not a problem with thicker paper.
I would try this and see if it works for you. Also,
did you try putting back in an Epson OEM cart and
running a test print with that?
When I was trying to figure out the problem, I posted
what my prints looked like here:
http://www.tronicart.com/inks/spray.html
...if you want something to compare to.
Let me know if this works for you or if you find some
other solution.
 Good luck..

Daniel, thanks for the advice, I looked at your posted problem, mine isn't nearly as wide of a spray, but its still noticeable.
Just tried what you said, pulled the carts and reseated them, switched tyhe paper to 0.
Wow, it lookd like 90% of the problem is fixed.
I'm going to try a few more cleaning cycles to see if it clears it up completely.
Are you getting neutral b&w with the MIS pigs.
I had CDTobie make profikes for me, but I still couldn't come close to the look of the dyes, no posterization, extremely rich blacks, smooth tonal gradations.
How are your b&w prints looking?
Thanks again for the cure.
David

David, glad to hear it's getting better. Be sure to
push the CIS cart back in *firmly*. "with as much
force as it takes to lift the printer from one corner"
as stated by NMC support. You might also want to let
it sit afterwards for a while incase any air got in.

I haven't tried printing b&w with the MIS pigs. I
have a dedicated 1280 w/ MIS VM inks (and Paul's
curves) for b&w printing. Which, by the way, makes
great prints.

I'm also going to have Tobie create a profile for the
MIS pigs but I'm still trying to pick a paper ..not
getting great results w/ Museo. I've got a post
comming up about that soon.
