Glossy paper preferences?

Glossy paper preferences?

2006-03-31 by Tyler Boley

Setting up for some K3 gloss here. I have no affinity for these papers
at all. Those of you who do, can you give me some recomendations?
I'm hearing Kodak and Ilford are well liked.
Premium Luster seems do dominate for "not quite gloss", and then there
are the SilverRag and new competitors.
For now, just need a gloss option for people as well.
Thanks,
Tyler

The Silver Rag should be called Gold Rag. It's pretty expensive. If this needs to be a paying proposition for the general consumer, Premium Luster might be a good choice. It's not too pricey, and the general consumer type seems to really like it.

InkjetArt Micro Ceramic Luster and Gloss are said to be the exact same
paper as Epson Premium Luster and Premium Gloss (250 versions), but
much less money. Other than seeing it with profile targets printed on
it, I have no real desire to use it or look at it. It looks kind of
like luster or gloss paper to me. Most of what I've seen have also been
from R800/1800 with GLOP, so I don't really know what it would look
like with the K3. The GLOP is definitely more glossy than the no GLOP
areas.

I've been thinking of at least looking at the Vibrance from Breathing
Color, but that's as far as I've gone.

SilverRag is rather a different category. For the Luster look, Moab
Kokopelli Satin suits my needs, but I don't tend to think of gloss/luster prints in
the same way I think of Fine Art prints...

I've used both...the Micro Ceramic Luster and Epson's Luster 250. They have the same
surface texture but the Micro is considerably brighter.

ILford Smooth Pearl has a slightly finer pebbly surface than Epson's Luster. Pearl is also
stiffer and thicker but has a blue/cyan surface bias.

Lab readings:

LAB for Luster L=95.93 a=0.69 b=-1.10
LAB for Ilford L=95.39 a=0.66 b= -2.33

I seem to always go back Epson's Luster...with InkjetArt's Micro Ceramic Luster close
behind.

Semi-Matte appears less "glossy" than Luster...has less of a sheen. Not a bad paper in my
book.

Wish all could be as thick as ILford's paper...

Tyler,

If any of the prints are intended to be archival, most glossy papers are
acidic. The Epson Premium line and the new Crane Silver Rag (and similar
Permajet [Innova?] versions) are exceptions I'm aware of. For proofing,
Kirkland is the cheapest by far, and it may even be non-acidic. I think the
finer grain finish of Epson Premium Semimatte is more pleasing than Luster,
and it's rather cheap in rolls. You may find bronzing is still a problem
with many papers. Spraying is one answer, but most don't want to bother.

Have seen mentions of DCP varnish for mat and Premierart for glossy.
For DCP : gloss/satin or mat version ? Any other options ?
Thanks.

guys, I realize it sucks...

But if someone comes in and insists on a glossy print, I can either
lecture them or make a kick-ass glossy print on the best available
material. I suspect the later will make them happier, and I just want
everyone to be happier!

So... no recomendations?

Hi Tyler-
I think Paul and some others recommended the Premium SemiMatte. Another
route for Some images is glossy canvas- while I never (EVER!) use it for art
reproductuions, it can be interesting for some photos- where it cuts across
the grain, so-to-speak.

Tyler, I second the motion regarding the beauty of K3 on Epson Premium
Semi Matte. It is more of a satin finish than high gloss. I've been
printing on it through ABW since buying my 4800 in July. I've had
portfolio reviews from galleries and fine art printers who have had to
ask me whether I was showing them darkroom or digital prints. I've
sold a few prints in the past few months. In trying to match
exhibition prints that earlier were on Agfa Classic fiber I generally
come very close or, sometimes, exceed the darkroom print (probably
more of a Photoshop advantage). The professional lab where I get my
color printing (darkroom) done did a real double take when I showed
them monochrome prints on this paper. Of course the tactile feel of
the paper is different, but it is quite nice. In a mat or behind glass
it looks very nice. This paper is not the end of history, I'm certain.
But it is very nice. I'm waiting for a box of Silver Rag to see if I
can get even closer to what I want. If you end up using EPSM, see my
earlier post #69902 for suggested ABW settings.
Cheers
Richard

Re: Glossy paper preferences?

I like glossy papers, just as I liked glazed (ferrotyped in US
English) fibre-based papers. Definition, detail and depth.

My suggestions for K3 inks:

Inkjetart Microceramic Plus (=Premier Photo High Gloss Heavy)
Red River Polar Glossy
Epson Premium Glossy

Innova Fibaprint Glossy (also sold as Da Vinci) for a slightly
textured surface

Pictorico White Film for a Cibachrome sort of look

The Innova paper is usually assumed to be silver gelatin fibre-based
paper by people who haven't been told what it is. This is a bit of an
insult, as I'm getting a D-max of 2.65 with it.

Best,
Helen

well friends, this has all ben quite surreal. Mostly I have again
discovered how misleading my writing can be...
One more time- all the papers you have all mentioned are no doubt
good, and I'll no doubt take a look at them. We are already setting up
Premier Luster and Silver Rag, and collecting samples of others.
However, none of them are glossy. I need a glossy paper alternative
when requested. Glossy, not kinda glossy, glossy.

So, as I mentioned, a Kodak and an Ilford have been touted in the
past. If any one has any comments about them or other recommendations,
I'll apreciate it.
This group over all others is picky about paper, I wouldn't bother
asking elsewhere.
Thanks again, hang in there...

Neither of which are "glossy" - Tyler himself termed the former "almost
glossy".

There you go, perfect example. Always try to stay away from saying
anything specific. I learned that from my president.
Could have been "is amost glossy", but then we'd have to go back one
administration for "is" and I fear the entire discussion will go
sideways..

Tyler

I have been doing some experiments with the Kodak Pro Glossy and the first results are (subjectively) good. My approach is to see if I like the overall look and feel of images before getting scientific and comparing DMax, building special profiles etc. This has saved me loads of time in the past when I found papers had characteristics I just did not like and I spent no more time evaluating.

Well I like the overall presentation of Kodak Pro Glossy so I will now embark on measuring and profiling to get the best results I can.

I will share my findings

Best

I've recently started doing some experiments with Pictorico's Photo Gallery
Hi-Gloss White Film, which, as the name implies, is actually a thin sheet of
plastic rather than paper. It's _very_ glossy (as in mirror-like), and
produces good results. I've shown samples to various people who all
preferred it to the various matte papers I personally like.

It does have a couple of downsides. The first is that it's very
expensive--around $2/sheet for letter size. The other is that there's some
gloss differential even with Ultrachrome K3 on one of the photos I've tried.
Turning on the white point shift option in the Advanced B&W settings has
mostly gotten rid of it (enough so you have to look really closely and know
where to look to see any).

Fuji Hunt Photo Paper Glossy 240. A friend uses it on the 4000
and it looks really good. That's what he sells his customers
as gloss.

There has been a discussion before in this list how gloss
could be measured :-)

There's an article on that in the latest JIST. I'll re-read it when I
get the chance and report back. I remember thinking that I should try
the Kodak Pro material.

Best,

I ran a quick test of some of the Ilford I had laying around, looks pretty good. I have others
on the way to ponder as well. interestingly, it seems to be getting down to size availablilty.
Thanks all for your recommendations,

Hmmmm....
no mention yet of epson ultra-premium glossy. It is better than premium glossy, which is good. The tonality is slightly diferent than premium glossy, as is the whiteness. The diference is not just thickness, which I think someone implied a while back. To me, there is a huge diference in the image also. I have only seen it in letter size and smaller so far though. I would give it a try. The premium glossy media choice in ABW makes works great. No profile required to see if you like the paper....Doug M

DCP Spray (RE: [Digital BW] Glossy paper preferences?)

2006-04-01 by Eric Neilsen Photo 2

I have been using a blend at 50/50 on Innova Smooth Cotton. I also ran some
test on HPR 308, Red River Polar Matte and Natural. I liked what I got on
all of them, but would need to alter the sprayer to print distance to get
the look I would want for each paper.

Tyler, I was helping a friend the other with some color management issues
and he introduced me to Orientals high gloss paper. The print looked good
for that type of print. It is however very fragile.

We did not find a profile for it, but it printed well with Bill's profiles
for Epson printers.

Why would that be uncool. As if no one around here promotes their
materials and ideas ;-).

Actually this may be one of the best workshops available anywhere for
controling digital mono output. I wish I could go up there and do it
myself. It would be a beautuful time of the year go to Vermont. Diallo
said he is doing one too. Sounds like you guys are going to have a
good time. I'm jealous.

Good luck,

RE: [Digital BW] Glossy paper preferences?

2006-04-01 by Eric Neilsen

Yes, He made it sound very expensive; almost to the point of not letting it
out of the package. I had to convince him that if he didn't put it in the
machine, there would be no way to test it. I can't say that too many first
prints of any particular paper were/are keepers. I think that a big part was
that he was unsure of the starting point/profile. The printer was an Epson
7600 with Atkinson's glossy profile. Since I don't print with glossy at all
right now, I didn't remember the cost.

Re: [Digital BW] Glossy paper preferences?

2006-04-01 by Carl Schofield

Tyler,

You are right, this stuff pre-dates the current silver rag "darling"
but is actually very similar with a smoother surface (and yes, they
both have the feel of cardboard from a new dress shirt package). I
tried (desparately) to make this work with the UC K2 inks when it
first came out but finally gave up because of the bronzing and GD
(not that bad and yeah, you can spray but that kills the look with
this paper). I think my QTR profile (2200, UC) is still included
with the QTR download. I haven't revisited Oriental with the K3
inks, but seeing how people are getting crazy about the silver rag
look this might also do it for them. with K3.

I haven't seen the Oriental, but that is a perfect description of my
first impreesion of Silver Rag when samples arrived.
If I actually purchased more dress shirts, I would have made that
connection much sooner.
Thank goodness putting some ink on it helps. Then again, I've only
seen the beta, not production samples, didn't they finesse the surface
a bit?

There has been an test/article in the German ColorFoto on
papers with gloss grades added etc. I will look it up and
quote some numbers but it is German/European orientated. The
papers are probably the same but the brands and names will be
different.

I will think of a way to measure it in DIY fashion. An old HP
scanner converted or the cheap laser light source I have now.

Ernst, in case it also says whether acidic (though I doubt for this
one), and OBA-free it'd be helpful to know. I went to ColorFoto.de : I
can't understand a word of German...

I doubt that it gives acidic quotes in that test but it had
some fade test numbers.

The problem is that I can't find that issue anymore. Could be
that I left it with a friend and he's now looking.

Isn't Chasseur d'Images getting part of their tests from
ColorFoto ?

Ernst.

I found the Inkjetart Microceramic Plus to print well, but it seems to
yellow a bit over time.

That would great a lot of noise if true !!!

I went to the link : no way I get a word...They're a magazine in
France too called "Inkjet" but I wouldn't dare posting a single of
their paper review. I believe for glossy we're on our own.

Tetenal Fine Art Premium Glossy is not bad, but only small sizes.
Amongst, all Epson ones, like Paul, I'd go for semi-matte, low
bronzing, clean surface, the only thing, is like Luster, it tends to
be slightly warm-green compared to Premium Gloss and semi-gloss. And
it's definitely not a hi-gloss paper, but a good compromise. For some
reasons, I feel hi-gloss papers do not show really vibrant colors as
compared to semi-glossy ones, I feel they tend to flaten the print,
but it's a personal view.

I'm still a believer we can produce decent BW on glossy stock, though
I must say I'm not yet there. Jon Cone is working on it, let's see.
