Congress is selling out the Internet - this could effect your use of YAHOO!Groups

2006-05-05 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

Normally I wouldn't post something in any sense political to the list,
but this has the potential to affect all the YAHOO! groups..

[PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY]

Do you buy books online, use Google, or download to an iPod? Everything
we do online will be hurt if Congress passes a radical law next week
that gives giant corporations more control over what we do and see on
the Internet.

Internet providers like AT&T are lobbying Congress hard to gut Network
Neutrality--the Internet's First Amendment and the key to Internet
freedom. Net Neutrality prevents AT&T from choosing which websites open
most easily for you based on which site pays AT&T more.
BarnesandNoble.com doesn't have to outbid Amazon for the right to work
properly on your computer.

If Net Neutrality is gutted, many sites--including Google, eBay, and
iTunes--must either pay protection money to companies like AT&T or risk
having their websites process slowly. That why these high-tech pioneers,
plus diverse groups ranging from MoveOn to Gun Owners of America, are
opposing Congress' effort to gut Internet freedom.

You can do your part today--can you sign this petition telling your
member of Congress to preserve Internet freedom? Click here:

http://www.civic.moveon.org/save_the_internet?track_referer=706%7C571152-Sx7iBQ7NlbcDp5pBcFv0oQ

I signed this petition, along with 250,000 others so far. This petiton
will be delivered to Congress before the House of Representatives votes
next week. When you sign, you'll be kept informed of the next steps we
can take to keep the heat on Congress.

Snopes.com, which monitors various causes that circulate on the
Internet, explained:

Simply put, network neutrality means that no web site's traffic has
precedence over any other's...Whether a user searches for recipes
using Google, reads an article on snopes.com, or looks at a friend's
MySpace profile, all of that data is treated equally and delivered
from the originating web site to the user's web browser with the
same priority. In recent months, however, some of the telephone and
cable companies that control the telecommunications networks over
which Internet data flows have floated the idea of creating the
electronic equivalent of a paid carpool lane.

If companies like AT&T have their way, Web sites ranging from
Google to eBay to iTunes either pay protection money to get into the
"fast lane" or risk opening slowly on your computer. We can't let the
Internet--this incredible medium which has been such a
revolutionary force for democratic participation, economic innovation,
and free speech--become captive to large corporations.

Politicians don't think we are paying attention to this issue. Together,
we do care about preserving the free and open Internet.

Please sign this petition letting your member of Congress know you
support preserving Internet freedom. Click here:

If you want to read the original bill (HR 5252) it's at:
<http://www.benton.org/benton_files/HR%205252%20COPE_0.pdf>

It's basically an end run on net neutrality by telecom carriers looking
for what is effectively a subsidy through ending net neutrality. The
bottom line is that they want it "to underwrite expansion of their
capital infrastructure in the form of physical networks." That, at a
time when even industry publications like Network World say there is a
glut of capacity. IMHO, that's the real agenda, these carriers built
too much capacity, they have lots of it after a round of mergers, and
now they want Congress to effectively tax all of us to pay for their
poor business choices. Sadly, that tax will also limit free and open
commentary on the net.

Why do you junk up these lists with political stuff that has nothing to do
with the topic of the lists? If I did this on your list, you'd ban me.

Paul,

#1 Legislation like this threatens the very existence of these kinds of
groups as free resources. So, it is VERY germane.

#2 As YOU are all too aware, the only time I ban people on my lists is
for personal attacks or commercial advertising.

Paul,

As you and I are both aware, we each believe in two different ways of
viewing business and government.

You generally believe that the free market should always be allowed to
price itself without government control. It's implicit in many debates
we have had, on many lists. Debates like the recent commentary over the
EPSON court settlement in California, and EPSON's supposed right to chip
cartridges to prevent recycling, reuse, and 3rd party ink refills.

This is just another one of those debates..

I'd also note that I allow you all the freedom you wish (which you
certainly use) to comment on such issues on my lists. So, it's more
than a tad hypocritical for you to be asking me to self-censor here,
especially by arguing that I would somehow limit your right to comment
on my lists. As you know, I rarely even clamp down on conversations for
becoming less than wholly germane to those lists, and in the absence of
personal attack, I NEVER shut down discussion of, or ban people for
engaging in germane discussion, even when it's barely tangential.

But I don't WANT to discuss this stuff on your printer-related lists or this
list. And I doubt most other people do, either. It simply divides people
into two camps who wind up not liking each other. While the issues are
important, and I'm sometimes willing to discuss them in other forums, I
regard it as an intrusion when someone brings up an issue that a) produces
deep ideological or philosophical divisions, and b) isn't on-topic for the
list. (The fact that this list is on the internet doesn't make every
internet-related issue on-topic.) While you can do what you want on lists
you moderate, I wish you wouldn't elsewhere.

In other words, anything said not in praise of free market is
provocative and off-topic.

And your attitude is equivalent to running tackle against free speech.
The issue brought to our attention by Keith is very much in the
interest of all internet users, including the users of this very Yahoo
group.

The issue has been discussed broadly in US and international press for some
time now. It is not an issue relevant for discussion here and has nothing
to do with free speech. Paul is correct on this.

Steve,
the discussion was regarding government interference as opposed to a free
market. Fuel cost was an example of an uchecked free market. The problem
with the free market concept is that it is not allowed to remain free.
Producers artificially manipulate a free market, thus effectively ending
free market.
The same problem is happening to free speech. Free speech is only tolerated
as long as those listening agree. If not, a great uproar ensues!
By the way, three dollars a gallon is only cheap if it had reached that
point by true free market forces. It has not.

Again - here is not the place for this conversation. It is provocative and
off-topic. Please discuss your "evil hand" economic theories elsewhere.

OFF TOPIC THREAD Re: Congress is selling out the Internet - this could effect your use of YAHOO!G

2006-05-07 by Martin Wesley

The topic of this Yahoo! group is digital black and white printing. Please
end this thread immediately. There are other places to discuss such things.

By joining this group everyone agreed to abide by the group guidelines which
include remaining on-topic. If you have forgotten those guidelines then
please review them in the "Files" section of the forum.

The important paragraphs in this situation are:

"Please only post messages and questions relating to making B&W (monochrome)
prints using digital techniques. This may sound rather narrow but it can be
very broad since it is impossible to discuss final output without
considering input in great detail. The discussion will include all aspects
of photography from image capture through final print, but posters should
make an effort to relate their posts to the ultimate production of B&W
prints.

"Users who repeatedly make off topic posts may have their ability to post
restricted or their membership terminated at the discretion of the group
Owner and/or Moderators. By participating in this forum users agree that
what constitutes an off topic post is solely at the discretion of the group
Owner and/or Moderators This may sound harsh but from experience it is
essential to maintaining a high quality and useful forum.

"If you have not done so already, read the Yahoo! Groups Terms of Service
These cover key issues regarding posting on this forum and other Yahoo
locations. By participating in the group you agree to adhere to the Terms of
Service and recognize that failing to adhere to these terms will result in a
loss of membership.

"Use of the forum by the members includes an expectation of basic good
manners and good taste. While digital B&W printing would seem like a very
mild topic to most, those of us with experience know that people can become
very impassioned over their art, ideas, and choice of materials. Open and
candid discussion is encouraged. However, courtesy must prevail and it is
expected that exchanges should not deteriorate into personal insults,
harassment, threats, etc. Beyond these obvious breaches of civilized
behavior, users who are persistently hostile, aggressive or argumentative
will be considered to be in violation of the rules and spirit of this forum.
In addition the group Owner and Moderators reserve the right to restrict the
access or membership of any member of the group as they feel necessary in
order to maintain the guidelines and decorum of the group.

"If posts are made in violation of these rules, intervention may be taken by
the Owner and/or Moderators as deemed necessary including restrictions on
posting,or loss of membership by offending members and/or the deletion of
messages posted to the forum. Due to time constraints and the large size of
the forum actions may be taken without advance warning or notice to those
effected. By using this forum members agree to abide by the group
guidelines; to be bound by the decisions of the group Owner and Moderators
regarding posts and membership status; and to hold the group Owner and
Moderator blameless for any actions they may take to uphold the group
guidelines."

Sincerely,
Martin Wesley
Group Owner

Thanks Keith,
For a moment, I was getting confused about that myself. You run a list
composed of iconoclastic, individualistic, opinionated, highly skilled
people and unfortunately some intolerant persons. It must seem like juggling
a hundred balls at once. You do it well.
