Innova glossy: Inconsistent mill runs?

Innova glossy: Inconsistent mill runs?

2006-06-20 by Kirk Thompson

I'm surprised to encounter so much inconsistency in the Innova F-Type surface.

A couple of weeks ago I borrowed some sample sheets from a lab/printer in my building.
We thought the surface was unattractive - not like an air-dried gelatin silver paper, but
stippled or indented.

But I tried again: After reading Michael Reichmann's Luminous Landscape review that
praised the paper, I wondered if I'd seen a bad lot. I tried a new package of letter-sized
paper. Out-of-the-box, the surface looked a little different, and prints on it looked
noticeably better - smoother surface, higher reflectance, & less (though still slightly)
stippled. I was won over by it & sent some targets off for color profiling. The blacks on
the target prints looked very deep & I could see why Michael was impressed.

Planning to print a portfolio on it, I bought two packages of 17x22" paper - only to find
that they matched not the letter-sized paper, but the 'cardboard'-surfaced version I'd
seen at first.

I subsequently got a private e-mail from a member of this forum, saying that the first
batches or runs of F-Type did look somewhat different.

I've sent an request to Innova for a return or replacement authorization of what I suppose
was a bad batch or early version. I understood that the 17x22" packages had been sent to
my dealer quite recently, so apparently it's still being sent out in some sizes or to some
dealers.

I'd urge anyone interested in trying the paper to be sure they can return it if it looks
deeply stippled, or simply inconsistent.

Guess I've never seen the "smooth" good stuff. The deep "stippling"
is present on all of the F-type that I have right now (17x22 and
11x17 inch sheets). Jim Doyle has probably seen more of this paper
than most of us so he may be able to comment more on consistency.

RE: [Digital BW] Innova glossy: Inconsistent mill runs?

2006-06-20 by Jim Doyle

Hi Carl & Gang

Yes Heres My Take..and its Not only with the Innova But with all three
papers.. I Havent played with the material as much as we would have liked
her at Shades..because I found it to be more beneficial to get the material
out to actual users who print for pay or print for themselves and sell their
work..as we all need to make a living..LOL.. I find that with each batch the
coating is getting better and the paper surface a tad smoother. On The
Innova I found that the black labeled product was a smoother batch than the
blue labeled product. On the Hahnemuhle I have received The rolls that were
actually labeled wrong was the best batch yet.. On the Crane it seems to be
getting better as I was Told I will be getting 8.5x11 sheets tomorrow off of
the 4th run..Horray at last! And Crane has reported to me a smoother coating
and surface Ill check a box when it arrives..

I believe That as more of this paper is made the better it will become. All
three have been rushing to get this product to the market and the demand has
been overwhelming and when they rush things get by..thats my best answer..

And My take

Thanks Gang for all of the support!

Now if I can Ask a question to the groupIs there any products that I am not
carrying that I should be?

And Tell me which paper everyone likes out of these new papers..I enjoy
hearing the comments..As I am still struggling with these papers as I really
like the rag papers and Matt black inks..

Cheers to ALL!!

I forgot to mention when I posted about the fine art papers recently
that some of the other pirnts I thought were really gorgeous were K7
on Museum Etching prints made by John Dean.
Anyway, Thanks to you Jim I'm getting these tests on all 3 papers out
to several people. I'm reserving my own subjective judgement right
now, but here's one observation- best to worse with regard STRICTLY to
gloss differential- 1) Innova 2) Crane 3) Harnerfarbenmullerpearlystuff.

I'll report back when other opinions come rolling in.

Innova FibaGloss Warmtone 300gsm

2006-06-28 by K2 Chittin

I thought you all might like to know that Innova has produced a
warm-toned version of FibaGloss. It has the same characteristics as the
neutral tone version but has a paper tone similar to Smooth Cotton High
White. We just received stocks today. Due to the close relationship we
have with Innova, I believe that we are the first to get this new
paper. We have it in all sheet sizes and rolls. We'll also be making
up 10 sheet A4 trial packs. In common with the rest of the Innova
range, with the exception of trail/sample packs, free custom profiles
are provided with any Innova paper purchased from us.

Full details will go up on our web site in a couple of days. In the
meantime, if anyone is interested, please contact us at
sales@....

It was meant more to be informative about the new product but, yes,
reading it again now, I guess the copywriter in me got the better of things.

Thanks for the heads-up K2. Have you run any through your printer yet?
Perhaps we can see some in future UK print exchanges.

Geez, we've been trying to tell them for way too long that if they came out with a nice warm
fine art paper to fill the gap left by the non-archival, and finally non-available, but very pretty
Concorde Rag they'd have a winner.
So they can quickly get this to market, and not that?
Maybe this is just the existing paper without the OBAs, so easy to gear up.

Results from my tests so far, good traditional printmakers are responding to Fibagloss best,
Silver Rag 2nd but think the whites are too dirty, no votes for fine art pearl yet at all...
Expecting more opinions though.

Steve

Not really had a chance to play with it yet. It should perform just
like the its neutral tone cousin from what I understand. It has the
same coating. Only the paper base is warmer.

And, yes, I will print on it in the next round.

Wasn¹t this thought to be the same paper as the Da Vinci? I¹ve been a
little out of touch recently but that is certainly my recollection. But it
must be wrong because the Da Vinci paper I tested with was simply awful re
bronzing and surface texture.

Fibagloss best,
Silver Rag 2nd but think the whites are too dirty, no votes for fine art
pearl yet at all...
Expecting more opinions though.

There's a mighty big difference between "a nice warm fine art paper"
and "pumpkin orange".

Concorde Rag, rest in peace!

Concorde Rag was not "pumpkin orange". I used it for years and the
results with Piezotone Carbon Sepia were excellent. Everyone loved the
print color. The problem was the image bleached out over time when
exposed to daylight. Legion created a lot of disasters around the
world with that one simply because it WAS the only really warm toned
paper around. I can't image how many prints sold through galleries
have faded by now. I would never buy anything sold by Legion as a
result. Don't trust their Photo Matte with the heavy dose of poorly
made oba's either. I've had those prints turn yellow in the whites
within 4 years hanging in my studio. We all live and learn.

Definitely not

In the earliest years of all this, it was really one of the only papers we could use. There was
only one inkset, MIS quads, and only one printer they could be used in, the 3000. There
was no 1160 at the time, or larger formats. Concorde Rag was really the first coated paper
many of us played with, the Hannaburger papers were not even out yet, some were
introduced under the Luminos label but HPR didn't exist yet, nor WillTurner, what was later
German Etching (Lysonic Fine Art, etc..) was too thick for our 3000s to advance acurately
though we were dying to use it becuae of the superior coating/image quality.
Somerset Enhanced came out shortly as an alternative, but for a short while it was
Concorde or uncoated Somerset. I used MIS, Lysonic quads (even cold), the first
Piezography, and some color as well, on Concorde and the prints were always nice.
Rest in peace for sure, but a viable warm paper would be nice to have, more for a fine art
paper than a faux silver paper.

If you say so...

Real khaki is pretty fade resistant. How about loading an empty cart
with Khaki, and precoating paper, or building a QTR curve that runs it
into the lighter tones. You could also do this with pigment inks, mix
yellow and magenta to get that "not pumpkin" (honestly!) orange, and
load that into one cart, probably the one in teh yellow position.

You could also run khaki through an HVLP sprayer.

You can brew khaki yourself from Osage Orange (aka, "hedge", "horse
apple", "bodark" or "bois d'arc") wood. Find someone who's got an old
farm with the bodark planted close together, get them to cut you a
limb and run a few pounds through the chipper. Boil it, and be
careful, that stuff stains.

Sure do miss that old Yahoo "up thread" button so I could find out to what you might be
refering.
If you can you elaborate, maybe I have what you need...

Hello Tyler,

I've received a FTP link and I've downloaded a file that is supposed to be
1520/3000 compatible.

I've got to rearrange things and install the new black head, so it'll
probably be the middle of the week before I get that sorted out.

I got Quadtone inks and they looked very good to me without the black
printing (Corel 9).

The only other problem I might be having is that the black reservoir was
really caked-up and my flushing hasn't cleared it completely.

Thanks for the help and this is a wonderfull group.

Soon, I hope to be where everyone else was 10 years ago!!! : )

Re; beginner paper.

I picked up some Inkpress matte 80 in 13x19 to get the 3000 and 1270 sorted
out for B&W. I plan to refill the 1270 K with leftover quadtone black and
try BO - switching to MIS Ebony in couple weeks.

What's a good scratch paper and what's a logical step-up for student priced
final prints??

THX,
gar
