Epson 4000 or 4800?

Epson 4000 or 4800?

2006-08-28 by roaccuk

I am considering purchasing either one of these two printers.
Basically I want the same quality as i am getting with my 1290 with
UT2 MIS inks but want to be able to produce prints 20" x 16" thus i
need an upgrade.

The 4000 seems cheaper if you can find one by around £400 which i
would prefer, but is the 4800 that much better?

Like i said i only need it for black and white and would convert it
instantly to MIS UT2 inks if i choose either one.

Any advice would apprciated.

many thanks

I think the equivalent of UT2 for the 4000 would be UT7, perhaps
someone else can verify that.

Since you plan on using those inks there is probably no advantage to a
4800. It's ABW system and K3 inks produce very fine BW prints, but
they would have a very different look and feel than what you're
getting now. You would likely have to make major adjustments in your
workflow to adapt to it, it's such a different approach (using color
inks).

However, it's also possible you might like that look and want to
change, so it might be good to look at some K3 prints before deciding.
The K3 printers are very popular. I was forced into a 2400 when my
2200 died (my only option with a trade up warranty), and now am very
glad it happened.

Clayton

The UT7 or new (hopefully soon to be out of beta) 3D inks (no sepia) run in
the 4000.

I think the 4800 may have a significantly better dmax when used with the
Epson driver, but it does not allow the dual black inks of the 4000. The
UT-3D should also run in the 4800. (The UT7 or 3D print on either matte or
glossy without the need for PK to be installed.) I don’t have either the
4000 or 4800, so I can only judge based on the sample test strips I’ve seen
from others.

Thanks guys

Thanks for your replies, it seems that the 4000 would be the better
option for me as i would like to keep the consitancy going with my B/W
printing, as i said before i am pleased with the MIS UT2 inks at the
moment and feel little reason to change. Now i have to find myself a
4000 for sale in the U.K at a reasonable price.

Just one other question Paul, are the UT7 inks very simalar to the UT2
inks and do you know if their are any curves for EEM for the 4000,

many thanks

>... are the UT7 inks very similar to the UT2 inks

Yes, but the C and M channels are switched, and the toner is slightly lower
gamut. The UT2 carbon inks (M and LM) are exactly the same as the UT7
carbons (C and LC). The sepia toners are identical, as are the black inks.
So, the only old UT2 ink you will not be able to use is the cool toner, UT2
C and LC.

> and do you know if their are any curves for EEM for the 4000,

Dirk Hobman made some curves.

Today I'd put the curves into ICCs. See
http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/Embedding_Photoshop_Curves_in_ICCs.pdf
That takes a lot of work out of the job by taking care of the final
linearization. With the linearization taken care of, it may be that curves
for the 2200 or 7600 and UT7 are close enough to just dump into the ICCs. I
have not tried this, but it would be one experiment I'd definitely do to see
if there were, as a practical matter, a number of curves already made.

Good luck with the system.
