Epson on the rampage

Epson on the rampage

2006-12-15 by Steven Karafyllakis

My R220 went down a couple weeks back, simply refused to accept paper
or DVD. I finally got the tech people to agree to replace it, and I
repeatedly told them I don't want an R260, already got one, please send
me another R220. Parting comment from the tech guy? 'we don't want the
old one back, recycle it'.

Today I received the replacement: a brand-spankin'-new R260. I don't
normally complain about getting an upgraded replacement, but we all
know whats up here. Epson is determined to eliminate 3rd-party inks, so
they want all the previous (refillable) machines gone asap. They no
longer have refurb R220s on the website, only the R340. Price is right:
$69.00 & free shipping. So if anyone still wants one get it while you
can! I did. Anyone want a new R260?

How much? And would you ship with the included inks or keep those for
your other 260?

One thing you should think about, those printers have only been out for
a short time. Just wait... there will be a way to reset the carts, and
as soon as that happens, there will be third party carts.

FWIW, within the past week I've seen R220's or R340's at more than one
Ritz Camera store, and I think they are still doing the "free printer
with camera purchase" rebate with those. So local might be an option.

OK, their circular says $89 and $149 before rebates.

My girlfriend could give it a good home, if it were cheap enough.

Where are you located? How much are you asking?

You're right, sooner or later we'll have refillables. But do I need two
of them right now? I'd rather one of each...

It would even be worth shipping without the inks-it goes un-openned, as
I received it, $50.00 plus shipping.

I actually managed to get a refurb 220 out of the Epson store this week. It
appeared to be virtually new. I don't know when or if the 260 carts will be
cloned. So, I wanted another 220 because it's a good printer and excellent
test bed for the rest of the printers we mostly use. Once I received the
220 I tested it and then put cleaning carts in to mothball the machine until
needed.

Paul, perhaps you've told us before, but what do you put in your
cleaning carts? I have a C88 that I'd like to mothball for a while.

I got one ( aa R220) last week at a Ritz in Roseville,
MN --it was 89.99 - $50 rebate from Ritz =~$40 for me
with OEM carts...(now I have 3 220's [one for color
the other 2 with Roark's R2W which I love] plus an
R320 that is with a buddy in Scottsdale and uses the
same carts and inks -- this latest one is for Seattle
where I'll be every-other week beginning in Jan) I
hope to look-up Tyler when I get there!

This was my experience. Except that I ended up with the R340 which appears to be the same as the R220 with some additional bells and whistles. It works fine.

R220 R340/320

2006-12-17 by Danny Twang

My C86 have served me well for a couple of years, loaded with MIS EZ
ink, but I'm starting to mess the border with ink.
I've tried to clean the rollers etc and it has helped a bit, but I
think its time to start to look for an replacement.
I've been looking around, and it seems the R220 is hard to find.
There is some R320 and R340 available,
are any of them working the same, with MIS ink, as the R220?

Thanks,
danny

FWIW, C88s are still available as refurbs from Epson USA for $59
delivered. I went to them after I wore out my C84s and I couldn't get
any more. They seem to work about the same as the C84s, and took the
C84 CIS with no hesitation (using the old chips, no less).

Cheers,
Kip

Thanks Tom,

Good to hear. I've heard so much good thin written about the R220,
but wasn't able to get hold on one before it was to late.
I'll get two of them, one for B/W with MIS ink and one for letter
size color. I only use roll paper in my 4000, and think it's a hassle
to cut down or use sheet. The R340 may be better on semigloss/glossy,
still the 4000 is great on luster...

thanks,
danny

Actually, I prefer the C88 for glossy paper. The 220 technology works great
for matte paper, but the C88 has a better dmax. (I'm only talking about the
Epson driver here. I've not compared them with a rip.)

More data points: I also use both a C86 and R200 to print using MIS
inks on matte papers. I have three R200s, and while they can make
beautiful prints, the paper handling is TERRIBLE. Much of the time
they won't even reliably feed standard bond, or Epson Enhanced Matte.
My finished prints are all on paper weights 190 - 300 gsm. Sometimes
it is impossible to get these papers to feed without damaging the
paper. Sometimes I can get the paper fed with devious manual
intervention. Feeding sandpaper through the paper path is another
stupid trick I use to keep a tooth on the rollers so they will grab
the paper. I had an old 900 Color Stylus that had an adjustable platen
that worked well. I guess that was before the marketers took
charge :) These desktop printers are really toys that are capable of
astonishing print quality, but there can be a lot of heartache in the
process.
The C86 won't autofeed the heavier papers, but it will always feed
with a simple manual assist.
The R200 is so poor in this regard I am going to try B&W inks in an
R800, but nothing to report yet.

Hi Philip

I hope you have more sucess with the R800 than I have recently. I use it
with the NK7 inkset which is great, however when trying to produce prints
for the current print exchange I had feed problems with every sheet of Photo
Rag Satin I used and damage from the rollers on perhaps 80-90% of the
prints. Changing to Bradford Rag produced exactly the same problem. I will
try your sandpaper trick to see if it improves the feed as I have been very
happy with the printer up to now.

I haven't done a lot of printing yet, but I have been able to coax
Moab Emntrada 190 gsm and Arches Infinity 230 gsm through the printer
without too much trouble. If I recall, this was true when I first
started printing on the R200, and things got progressively worse over
the course of a couple of weeks. I wish Epson would make a pro quality
small format hextone printer. I think the R1800 has a rear loading
slot for thicker paper, so this may be an option. The 2400 is a
possibility, but who wants to juggle 7 inks to print B&W with a

the course of a couple of weeks. I wish Epson would make a pro quality
small format hextone printer. I think the R1800 has a rear loading
slot for thicker paper, so this may be an option. The 2400 is a
possibility, but who wants to juggle 7 inks to print B&W with a
monochrome inkset?

I'm not David, but nobody seems to be answering your question so I'll
jump in here. The MIS grayscale inkset for the 2200 has been UT7 for
a couple of years. I think that the UT-R2 inks may now also be used
in it, but I'm not certain. Best to ask MIS about that (or Paul Roark
if he sees this). The Piezo K6 inks can also be used in the 2200, so
that is another option.

Clayton

PiezoTone inksets can be found here.
www.inkjetmall.com

There are several options for B&W on their site. I am using the NK 7 Split
Tone in my 2200 with excellent results.

Assuming that I'm the David in question, the UT3D inkset is the one that can
best be used in the 220 or 2200, and profiled via PrintFIX PRO v2.0 for ICC
controlled, gallery quality B&W and tinted B&W printing.
