MIS Ink cartridges and Epson R220 and R340 printers

MIS Ink cartridges and Epson R220 and R340 printers

2007-01-17 by John Bevans

I recently bought a R220 and ordered an MIS cartridge set in order to
print what I hoped would be quality B&W prints. When I installed the
cartridges the LC cartridge would not work (covered in another post)
since then two more people have posted to this forum with cartriges
from MIS that will not work on these printers.
Does MIS have quality control problems? If I need to reseat the
cartrige they should include the cartridge setter in the order. This
has discouraged me with the whole project. MIS resonse to my problem
was reseat the cartrige. ( I explained in my problem report that this
had been done ) Is MIS the only supplier available? Maybe they just
want to sell CIS.

From the MIS website:

What You Will Need to Refill a Spongeless Cartridge

    * Spongeless Cartridges (Black and Color, plugs included)
    * Ink - 6 colors (or 4) or B&W shades of ink, 15 cc of each.
    * 10 cc syringe
    * Lure lock needle 1 1/2 long
    * MIS Bottom Fill Adapter (MIS-BADPT)
    * SK168 Chip Resetter

All of these materials can be purchased below.

I have several sets of carts that I use on the R220 and R340. Not one has actually failed. I do need to reseat the cart ocassionally. Also, I will gently clean the chip. I refill and switch these frequently without any real issues.

It would be useful to find out the differences in the various setups that work/don't work. But, that's difficult.

I should have made it clear in my previous posts: the MIS spongeless
cartridges are top notch. I have several sets and use them in a C86
and two R200s. Except for an occasional clog due to an air bubble, all
the irritating problems I experience are related to chips, and you can
thank Epson for burdening users with this miserable architecture. It
is fiddly, but it can be made to work. I think a chip resetter is a
required tool for the smaller Epsons, even if you purchase prefilled
cartridges. I once received a UT-R2N cart that was labelled R2W. Other
than that, I haven't experienced any QA lapses from MIS.

Tom, my set up was new printer new cartridges. After the LC cartridge
failure. I tried the LC cartridge that came with the printer. It
worked fine. I tried the MIS LC cartridge in a R340 printer. It failed.
I adjusted tabs, I reinserted, I made sure the cardtridge was seated
properly and pushed to the rear. It don't work. The printer says it
cannot recognize the cartridge.

I know that bad carts/chips happen. Did MIS replace?

I have asked for replacement. Tech support said reseat cartridge and
asked what error I got when printing.
I will update when I hear from MIS again. I will probably order a
refill kit if we can get past this. But would like to see a couple
prints before I commit more dollars.

As one having similar problems, I am beginning to wonder if the hassle
of 3rd party inks is really worth the results. But since I have yet
to even print a test pattern I have no way of knowing. Maybe I'd have
been better off just sinking $1300 on a 3800. (in my opinion the 2400
at ~60% of the price of a 3800 just doesnt seem like a very good
deal). or maybe i should have been more patient and waited for the
cone inks to come out for the smaller epsons (~2-3 months).

That being said, i can certainly understand things not working
somtimes. i just wish that they would have said on thier order page,
something like "5% of the time, the chips get messed up and dont
work. if you have bad luck on things like this, you may want to order
a chip resetter and a few replacement chips just in case." then if i
chose to ignore thier advice...shame on me.

having something easy to find on thier knowledgebase would have been
nice as well.

I suppose i cant whine too much though...im only going to be out $70
for the ink if i decide to sell the R340 and the epson inks it came
with.

Caveat Emptor

For what it's worth, the R220 and R340 are capable of some very nice prints with the MIS inks. Of course, if you can't get ink to come out of the carts, it's pretty useless.

Epson hopes you will get frustrated and just resign yourself to using
their inks. If you want to print b&w with a dedicated inkset, don't be
deterred. The R200/220 is capable of beautiful prints with MIS inks.

Re: [Digital BW] MIS Ink cartridges and Epson R220 and R340 printers -follow up

2007-01-25 by John Bevans

To all that offered help and to MIS thanks. My problem was resolved
and I am printing using the MIS ink set. MIS sent a replacement
cartridge and that resolved my problem. There were propably other
solutions but wanted to try my new setup before investing more. MIS
was very rsponsive to my problem.
